I have a Zhone 6819 modem. Wireless setup. My Win7 laptop connects perfectly. Vista connects if I use cable but won't wireless, so the modem and wireless are ok. The problem seems to be Vista settings. I get, unidentified network, RED X, yellow triangle with exclamation point, excellent signal strength, limited connectivity, local only. I can't connect to internet or ping the modem, 192.168.1.1 Security set to WPA2-Personal,AES. These settings worked before on old 6818 modem. Modem set to Mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK / TKIP+AES. Help please!
Tom

Try deleting the router from the list of wireless access points on the Vista machine. Also, can it connect to any other wireless networks (it sounds like it can, if I'm understanding you correctly)?

While digging deeper, I found that Norton 360 lists my Vista ip address as 169.254.84.167 in the Norton Security Map. Vista ip address is actually 192.168.1.4. Could this be the problem? I just emailed Norton to see if I can somehow change the settings/address. Unfortunately all the other networks listed are secured. If I find out, I will post the answer.

169.254.x.x IPs indicate an error. Is the computer set to use DHCP with the network? (go to the Network and Sharing Center, Change adapter settings, select the network adapter you're using)

In the network and sharing center there is nothing listed as - change adapter settings. I clicked on Unidentified Network icon and in the Network Window the adapter isn't shone. The Wireless Network Connection Status window shows IPv4 Connectivity as Limited. The Device Mgr. lists Atheros AR5007 as working properly. How do I get the Net & Share Center to find the adapter?
The following is Norton's answer;
Let me tell you that there is not an option to edit the IP address settings in the Norton program. However, we can delete the device added to the Network Security Map and then add that device with the correct IP address.
My question is if the Adapter isn't connected, how would this solve the problem?
Thanks, Tom

I uninstalled Norton 360 and no change. The pc is set to use DHCP. I have been searching the web for weeks to no avail. Probably the only fix is to reinstall the operating system. This was the only fix for other problems that I have with VISTA. I really hate this system. But before I do this, I'm going to cable it to the modem. It doesn't have to be mobile since it sits on my work bench.
Thanks for your help BrianD.
