My sis in law called me and told me that their Computer starts in safe mode. When she restarts and gets to the screen where she can choose between normal and safe mode and she chooses normal she only get a black screen with a blinking icon/ line (thats what she told me) in the left bottom corner. I had her update the video driver but it said the best driver is already installed. The Computer is running Windows ME and I tried to have her uninstall the driver to reinstall it, but she said there was no option to uninstall. They live 10 h away so no way for me to go and look at it myself. also this is their first computer ever (it was my husbands old HP and we gave it to them a lil while ago to practice :D ) so they don't know anything about computers. Any ideas what could be wrong? I was just down there 2 weekends ago and had reformated the thing (cause they had tore it up then too  ) so everything was working fine when I left there. So they must have done something what they were not supposed to be doing for that to happen. Any Ideas what I could try? I am also not too familiar with Win ME. I'd appreciate it!

Hi Silke. It sounds like they deleted something within the Windows directory (like you said that they should not have done).Since her computer will start in Safe Mode, you can walk her through troubleshooting by going to this link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273738I think it may be best to start at the section: Windows Me Starts in Safe Mode. Now, if after you go through this troubleshooting and it still doesn't work, I would do a reinstall of WIndows ME or, if the system can handle it, install XP.8)

Thanks, mphenterprises. Yep Windows directory.....thats what it sounds like to me. Was hoping maybe I was wrong! I will check out that link and see what it says, if it seems to complicated I may just walk her through the windows reinstall. I am sure you know how it can be to walk someone through stuff like that who has no clue at all! :lol:We actually had Windows 2000 on there when my husband used it and it was running fine with that (after a minor RAM upgrade from 256MB-1GB). Not sure about Windows XP. But every time we go to Louisianan to visit I have to reformat the darn thing and I got tired of putting the 2000 back on and then do Windows Update via Dial-up (thats all they got :x ) to get all the drivers working. Thanks for your help!Silke
