Sure makes the new Nexus initiative from Google look enticing. That is assuming they plan on offering CDMA compatible devices in the future. At only $400 for a top tier phone direct from Google, It's worth keeping the unlimited data plan.

Bye Bye Verizon. It's been a fun 15 years, but when a friend or aquaintance reaches a point where they think they are better than everybody else, I must end the friendship. I can't stand an egomaniac. I also can't abide a liar and when Verizon claims that unlimited data is a burden, they are flat out lying. Period.

Rumor has it that for Jellybean, Google is going to release four or five Nexus phones (all from different OEMs) instead of just one. I'd bet at least one of those will work on Verizon's network.

If you already had a 4g phone you were fine, subsidized prices and all. At worst, those who still had 3g phones would need to buy a 4g phone at full price before the summer switch, and they'd be safe. All this does is close the loophole and hurts everyone.

So, if I have to buy the phone at full price to be able to keep my unlimited data plan, why would I buy it from verizon? I think most people would reather buy the unlocked version of what ever phone they want and be able to have a phone that would receive OS update without the hold that Verizon puts on them and the ability of downloading what ever app you want without having Verizon block them...not to mention a phone free of the BS pre-loaded verizon apps...

I will say this AGAIN!!!!
Why would anyone pay Verizon full price for a phone to keep the unlimited data plan, when in the future I will be able to go to Google play and get one of their Nexus Phones for a reduce price. A phone that since is a “vanilla” version will not have to deal with Verizon’s BS added apps and blocked apps; more importantly I will have a phone that will receive all the OS updates as soon as they are available and won’t have to wait for months or even years for Verizon to release the update. It seems to me like the extra money for the phone will be more than worth it.

I've been a Verizon customer for a decade now. They have constructed a maze of caps and loopholes where they can stick their customers with overage penalties and extra fees at every turn. I don't know anyone who doesn't pay some type of overage penalty every month. I have paid thousands of overages to Verizon of the years and each time I hate their corporate contempt for their customers even more. The only reason customers put up with it is the lock in contracts for subsidized phones.

Overage fees for text messages or voice is evil. Particularly with free sms and voip services all over but Verizon blocks most of them on their network. Where is video chat on my android that is completely capable to do it? People in Japan were doing it a decade ago but Verizon and other evil wireless carriers have blocked it here for years.

Complements to Neowin. VZW states that you can keep your ORIGINAL UNLIMITED DATA PLAN, by paying cash for your device.

Which is what I will always be doing.

We don't need a new device every year. if you can afford to buy a new device every single year, than you shouldnt be signing contracts anyways.

I realize $500 or more for a new device is hefty for the vast majority of us and the carriers pretty much got them at their begNcall. However with new devices coming so fast, the best thing to so is save up to buy the fastest possible device you like, that you can stand to keep for 2 years no matter what you see up and coming.

Save $21 which is easy even if you work at McDonald's. It may require cutting back on bad habits, but they coudl stand to die anyways...right?

Go on eBay. In many cases you can beat the retail price on ebay for the same exact device. I have seen cost that beat the retail price by as much as $100 on Android/Windows based devices. The iPhones tend to cost more on eBay vs retail, but if you look you can even beat retail cost on them as well by a much smaller margin tho.

If your phone is old, consider buying a device that meets the requirements you need that si a year old. A year old device brand new will be 1/2 or less its orginal value.

Try buying a refurb. Refurbs are just devices that may have had problems the carrier couldnt fix, so the device was sent to be repaired usually buy the company that makes them. Refurbs usually come with a warranty of some type. Carriers won't directly sell you a refurb unless you sign a deal. Avoid that if you can. The only plus with signing a deal is the carrier covers the device through their insurance for as long as you have it.

As a car dealer will say, if you ahve to finance a car or truck for more than 60mos, then you are trying to get a car you can't afford anyways. Apply the same logic to a smartphone. if you need to sign a year deal every single time you want a new device, then likely you dont need it. You dont have to have the next new thing.

I still see people using older devices for as far back as 2005 with no problem. Keeping up with the Jones cost money and fact is, many peopel can't afford that lifestyle.

You don't have to yell... my understanding is that your unlimited data plan will go away when you renew your contract. If you're month to month like I am, you keep your unlimited data.

None of us are Verizon corporate policy makers, however, according to the info posted in several articles, a current UNLIMITED data plan is grandfathered, until you buy a NEW 4G phone, at a subsidized price. Used phones (4G or otherwise), from any source, are exempt from the forced data plan change. Whether this info remains true tomorrow, remains to be seen.

They should develop a new family plan for data and give the consumers another options. I understand that they are not making a enough money ("Verizon still managed to post a profit of $1.7 billion for the quarter")and we need to make up for the difference. Well, I guess I need to pack up my bags and start shopping around after 12 years.

Why did you stay with them for a decade if they treat you this way? I can't feel sorry for you - you let them do this!
