Hello everyone,

I just recently started having a big issue with my laptop, it is an ASUS g74sx

running windows7 64bit 8Gb Ram and 1Tb of memory. After a recent update through

Asus Live update ( drivers I think ) my computer began acting weird. Fisrt my

resolution changed to minimum, my theme was reset to windows classic ( was using

aero before ) and i lost the ability to right click my screen to bring up the

nvidia control panel ( the menu is no longer there ). Since then my computer has

been running slower, even right after i turn it on and i keep getting a couple

of screen referring to nvidia one is a BIOS flash update notice that says "The

BIOS file version does not match the Bios ROm version. Click exit to exit" the

second one is a command prompt screen "c:\program files <x86>\ASUS\ASUS Live

Update\Temp\42>setup.exe -s -n -log:C\Windows\temp\NvidiaLogs -loglevel 1:6"

since this happened i cant seem to be able to use any of my nvidia's custom

settings (the control panel wont even open. I have run Avast and MWB full scans

in my computer just in case but nothing, also i use a 32 inch screen as a

monitor and my computer doesnt seem to be transmitting sound to it anymore any

sound will come off the computer instead of the TV speakers.Im really getting

frustrated at this and any help that anyone can provide will be greatly

appretiated.

Thanks in advance

If you have any Restore points prior to the ASUS update, roll back to that day and see what happens.

Hey SistemError!

Have you gone to the Asus web site to download the latest drivers??

If not then, I recommend you do so :

http://ca.asus.com/e...werhouse/G74SX/

Click on the "Download" button and enter your OS's bitness (eg.32 or 64)

This will bring you to the download page for the Right drivers and (most importantly)
the correct BIOS.

From what I see, you shouldn't of had a new BIOS update as the last one is dated

"2011.10.14 update".

Try what ElfBane suggested but, if this doesn't work, make sure you have the correct BIOS by
booting in the BIOS utility , and verify that it is the correct one.

I used the WinFlash utility on their site as suggested , to update the BIOS . There is also
another tool that is suggested but, I am not familiar with it.

Could you also check the Device Manager to see if there are any yellow Triangles next to any of the
entries. Start / Control Panel / Device Manager.

If you don't see it in the Control Panel when it opens, Click on the "View By" arrow (Upper Right Hand Side)
and choose "Large Icons".

As for the last update for your Video Card, the site says "2012.03.21 update" .

I know from experience that, Asus doesn't keep up with the latest drivers for their Video Cards.
They tend to "play around" with them. So, I would suggest you follow their recommended
updates. I believe the latest driver from nVidea is the 296.10 - WHQL version for your graphics card but,
it also says to see if your notebook builder has a different one or is supported.

I like to do the updates manually (I own a G73JH) and visit their site for any updates available from time to time.

I just don't trust those Auto update programs.

IF you would like to visit this site :

http://forum.noteboo...ware-guide.html

it will tell you what programs (or what we call Bloatware) are really needed and which ones are just junk.
You can then decide if you really need them or not.

Give us an update on what your findings are.

Thank you for the replies, ill try and and update the drives from the asus website, i don't know if its relevant but after restarting my computer a few times the it seems the update finally took effect and i could access the Nvidia settings again. There where no yellow triangles in the device manager. Hopefully it was just a small update problem, ill try the Bios updater once but I will definitely try and update the drivers manually from now on. Checking on the registry editor under BIOSVersion it reads G74Sx.201 i Think this may mean it is outdated since on the site all i could find is 202 and 203 if all else fails and i get this problem again ill definitely try and use a previous restore point and go from there.

Update: Tried using asus live update and WinFlash to update the BIOS ( After i downloaded it from the ASUS site ) but no dice I keep getting the same "The BIOS file version does not match the Bios ROM version. Click exit to exit" message

Hey SistemError !

I
f you want to know which version of BIOS you have installed , you can download this little program : Speccy
from Piriform : http://www.piriform.com/speccy

It will , amongst other info, (lots of info) tell you which version is installed. You just might have the right one
installed , hence the error.

Hi there!
Strange I also have a relatively new asus g74sx which just recently got the exact same problems. Have been google-ing my a** off since it happened and also tried to update my nvidia GPU. Thought it worked untill the computer rebooted again today and got the same problems again. I'll be following this post so I can know if you guys find a solution. At least I'll let you know if i'll find one. Pretty annoying, with all those bugs you mentioned there are also some others like when I'm trying to play BF3 the computer goes off fullscreen mode the second something happens in the background (like when I get a skype call). Everything about this is making me insane.
Regards,
equally unlucky and frustraded guy as you are.

Hey gizzle !

Welcome to PC World Community!

As I mentioned in my previous post to SystemError, Asus loves to play around with their video drivers. From my experience with
a G73Jh, it might take some time for the truth to come out. (took us over a year of Grey screens of Death)

It might not be the same problem as we faced with the G73s but it sure sounds like it. I would recommend you follow the recommended
driver install from Asus' site.

There shouldn't be anything interfering when you are gaming. This might just be a configuration error. Make sure that Skype is not set
take priority when you are gaming.

Any other little quirks you are experiencing? IF so, you might want to consider starting your own thread. This way, more members will
view the new thread and more replies could be had.

Thanks!
There are only a few other quirks i'm experiencing are quite little. For example sometimes my touchpad decides to go on a frenzy, clicking randomly and moving the mouse franticly. But I rarely use the touchpad so it doesn't matter that much. Maybe I'll start another thread but decided to comment on this one to start with. I'll try the drivers on the asus webside. As I said before I downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers and thought it fixed the problem because I got the computer back up to 1080p. But then it happened again and I saw that the thing that fixed the problem was restarting the computer :/ but this happens again and again.

Welp i have tried speccy ( founded very useful overall ) and according to it the BIOS Version is G74Sx.201 Released on 04/27/2011, so that's a bit confusing being as 202 and 203 are out on the ASUS site, not only that but recently i have had new issues, mostly slow start ups and once in a while my screen will go pink and the computer will freeze or it will recover telling me that the video and audio drivers crashed and still won't let me update the BIOS manually or using the asus or flash updater, its getting annoying but i hope there is a soulution out there. Thanks for the help

Hey SystemError !

OK, well, there has to be something else that's not letting you update the BIOS.

Have you tried to do a System Restore to a previous point Before you had this
problem? You might not have a restore point going back that far but, it's worth a try.

Start / Computer / System Properties / System Protection

OR Right click Computer and choose Properties from the menu. Then, System Protection.

A pop-Up will appear . Click on the System Restore button (middle left)

Another Pop-Up will appear . Choose Next. On that screen, check mark the box

"Show More Restore Points" and go from there.

You might also want to try the Asus - ROG Forums.
Here is the link :

http://rog.asus.com/...eries-Notebooks

I haven't had the time to investigate your particular problem on their site but,
I did see something referring to Live Update so, it might be in your best
interest to read up and maybe ask a few questions while you're there.

You will have to register to ask questions but, not to read older posts.

Your screen going pink seems like a Video problem. IF you have updated the
video driver recently, you might want to Uninstall the Driver for your card and
do a restart. The OS will go in the Driver cache and re-install the original driver.

Control Panel / Device Manager / Expand Video Adapters. Double click on the Video Card
On the ensuing Pop-Up , click on the Driver Tab. Bottom Left - Click Uninstall
and reboot.

One more thing. How old is the notebook, I know it's relatively new but, you do
have Two years of Warranty for any problems you might encounter and cannot
fix on your own. Give them a call and see if they know about your problem or
they might ask you to RMA (send it in) for repairs.

Keep us to date on your situation.I will try and investigate further but, my time at the
moment is limited.

Ill give the the ASUS forums a go, i have tried restoring to a previous point but after a few updates the problem comes back.
Update: I just downloaded a new set of drivers don't know if that will fix the issue but I'll give it a try. I bought the laptop around July of last year, don't know if that will help.

Thanks for the continuous help, i know people are busy but i appreciate all the help i can get and have gotten, will post if the issue is fixed whether from the ASUS forums or by the driver update.
