I have one. The last time I logged in was to remove everything, and that was months to years ago. I don't remember.
As for the advertising thing. It's a joke. Any time I get an advert, or sweepstakes going to FB as a requirement. I generally send an email to the company explaining that they're losing people.

Only about 12-13% of the world population actually uses Facebook. Obviously, if the vast majority can do quite fine without it, it's not actually an essential tool for communications. Five billion of the 7 billion global inhabitants own cellphones...that's what I call an essential tool.
Furthermore, Facebook isn't going to be able to expand its user base for much longer. That's because Internet adoption is currently limited to 2.2 billion people. Obviously, not all persons currently using the Internet are going to feel the need to use Facebook. Just look at the North American market as an example. Out of 273,000,000 Internet users, only about 173,000,000 are on Facebook, and Facebook's membership in the US and Canada has become stuck at 50% since last year. If Facebook can't snare the remaining 100 million additional Internet users in North America, it's not going to do any better in most parts of the world.
There are still many countries whose Internet populations have extremely low Facebook use. There's no reason to expect that will change anytime soon, especially in China, a country which accounts for 22% of all Internet users but has less than 500,000 facebook users. When you do the math, it's clear that Facebook is about as big as it's going to get.

Over time, more and more of those 5 billion cell phone users will be getting smartphones. I can't say for sure, but I strongly suspect that most of these will come with internet access. And, when it comes to Facebook, as Apple used to tout, "There's an app for that." This is a huge potential for growth.

It's easy to create a fake facebook identity. I never pay attention to facebook ads, I don't allow fb apps to 'post as me', if fb apps require me to join... I don't, I only created a 'real' fb account limited to a few friends... and really, they don't much care... although I do hear more about/from friends who have moved away.
All it Takes for Evil to Triumph Is for Good Men to Do Nothing.
Rule our lives... b.s. What is ruling our lives is Corporate America... of which FB, Google, etc. are a part, for better or worse.
