Man, your usage must be REALLY atypical then... in my case, btw, there are 11 devices on the network, though we almost never have all of them in use at once, and a lot of them probably aren't using much bandwidth. (an ipod, a phone, roku, bluray player, squeezebox, 2 desktops, 4 laptops)

In case you're wondering:

The cable modem (a motorola) is right behind it btw. Both feel a little warm, but I doubt they'd be much cooler if they were, say, sitting on an open shelf. Again, the cover is always off nowadays, just like in the picture.

Remember, not all traffic is alike. Secure traffic, NAT, DHCP, Firewall rules, VPN etc all place extra loads on the router. So much so, that even the Netgear is only rated for 20Mb/sec running VPN, and ONLY 60Mb/sec LAN to WAN in NAT mode. Smaller packets sent more often are likely to cause the overheating than large packets loading web pages. This is all defendant on how much work the router has to do.

Waldo,I Finally got my combo router+modem from comcast to work good.It has a range of ~370-400 feet, depending on whats between me and my router.I Have it on 11 band or whatever its called,so no one else is :D .I Am actually seeing d/l speeds of 16 Mb/s with the laptop near it.The modem is rarely hot,and I have 10-15 devices on at any given time(TV,4 laptops,3 desktops,2 ipods, couple of tablets, and a home server.)
Dell Studio XPS 9100.Core i7 930,8GB RAM,2TB HDD,Radeon 5870 2GB.W7 Home Premium 64Bit.Gateway TA6,W7,2GB RAM,Touchscreen Tablet.Kindle Fire,Galaxy Tab 10.1,Inspiron 17.

I am glad for you. In fact, I am happy for everyone who can keep them running that way. I will say that I don't have that kind of luck. When I start stressing my gear, consumer gear can't cut the mustard. When I start rocking VPN through my router, I expect this Netgear Prosafe to do things consumer products can only dream of. Knowing, of course, that this router can handle 20Mb/sec maintained VPN 3DES with SSL should I really need it to... while the WRT54G can only maintain 500Kb/sec. There is a vast difference in design and engineering. There always has been, and always will be.

I make absolutely no attempt to hide the fact that this is expensive. I also will not hide the fact that it is likely overkill for most users. However, you don't get any better gear.

I'm to lazy to buy a DOCSIS 3 Modem,so I'm just leasing one from Comcast. For laughs,I turned on 6 lappys,4 desktops,3 ipods,4 tablets,a home server,4 phones, and it STILL Didnt lag.And its still not very warm. And its under the TV,With no air vent near it.

Oh mine wouldn't lag either. Not for about 6 months. Then the crazy little things start happening. Random disconnects, IP address conflicts (won't keep track of assignments), random DNS failures, etc. The problems slowly get worse, until you finally hit that point of no return.
