HP laptops don't seem to be great quality. (Lenovo is pretty highly rated around here.) Second, you are aware that that only has 160GB of storage, right? Yes, it's solid state, but I'm not sure that should be the highest priority in this price range.

For example, you can get a Ideapad Z570 for $629 with an i5 2450M and a Geforce GT 540M - slightly better graphics and a much better CPU than the HP you mentioned. Another one to look at is the Y570 - $710 gets you the same i5, plus a geforce 555M (definitely better than the A8's graphics). Even with the Y570, compared to the hp you mentioned, you'd still have $130 left over that you can use to buy an 128GB SSD for it if you want.

Hi, for your stated usage it should be just fine. The Ideapad Z570 that Brian mentioned is a very good choice ( I am partial To Intel Processors anyway ) and for a lesser price.

SSDs can be much better. The problem is finding out what manufacturers are going to give you. For example, Apple has been using both Toshiba and Samsung SSD's. The Samsung drives are typically 30% faster or more than toshiba. The Toshibas were posting performance barely on par with standard hard drives.

I have to agree, that so far, Lenovo offers the best option for light gaming machines and decent quality.

Also, manufacturer upgrades are usually highly overpriced, and HDs/SSDs are no exception.

Good point and I tend to overlook that as do others I think.

Personally I think $800 for the HP is a bit over priced, considering the specifications of it.

The best thing about SSD's are they are real fast at reads. The best configuration is use a SSD and a HD. The SSD can be used for a boot drive (OS drive) and your boot times will be 3 to 4 times shorter then HD's times. The advantage for SSD's over HD's isn't as great for write times.

Very true, but write times have improved significantly with the new SATA 3 drives (even on a SATA 2 board, I was happy to discover :P ).

While SSDs are nice... in terms of price per GB (especially when you're going for a budget laptop), it would be better to simply get higher amounts of storage. From the laptop the OP is showing, it seems that price definitely seems to be a factor in this. Besides, why bother having an SSD if you're not going to have a really good processor to go along with it? :P

I have a SSD drive and the advantage if the boot up times and application load times. My laptop with a 5400 RPM HD boots in over a minutes with a mid range SSD it boots in 23 seconds. The best way to use a SSD is with the SSD as a boot drive and a HD as a data drive.
