Is formating or partitioning a new hard drive necessary before transferring a complete system backup to said hard drive?

I don't think so - you're just going to overwrite that hard drive with the backup data anyway.

Yes, Initialize and then format the new drive in NTFS. Partioning is entirely up to you, but isn't necessary.

Coastie--

Why do you feel it's necessary to do that. The act of restoring an image backup to a new drive effectively formats it.

Hey Lincoln, Probably not, just a personal preference. When I moved the stuff from my Caviar Black 1 TB SATA II drive to the new Caviar Black 1 TB SARA III Drive I did intialized and format the new new drive, but as I said, that was a personal preference.
