I think that Open Source in this case is collateral damage to a broader effort of Microsoft to create an OS that is much easier to maintain and support. LIke they did with Windows '95, MS is taking a cue from Apple, though thins time they are not waiting over a decade to do so.

It's a fear knee-jerk panic reaction of a company that secretly knows it's in deep trouble. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft goes out of business in 5-7 years time. They're being attacked from all sides Apple, Google, Oracle, Amazon, IBM, Linux, it's overwhelming them and its getting to the point where Microsoft's anti-competitive behavior is predictable and extremely self-destructive.

Why not say hey microsoft, "screw you" and use mono develop.
