My friend corrupted her file system on her external HDD, so I tried some data recovery tools but the problem is that that the programs renames all the files either file001, file001.... or just a random name. Is there any program that will also recovery the file name as well?
It gets pretty tough to go though the files that are recovery when they are randomly named and the software I tried recovers everything that was ever on the hard drive(thousands and thousands of files). I downloaded trinity rescue kit as a livecd and ran photorec, but that randomly renames the files. I also tried some windows based programs like easeus Data Recovery, which also renames the files, and recuva, but that doesn't restore any files that I need.

Stellar Phoenix should do the job.

Recuva is a free one that seems to work pretty well in my opinion.

To recover lost, inaccessible and permanently deleted files from Windows partitions, there are several free tools available but they don’t provide guarantee to success in every case. Kernel for Windows is a robust third party software that efficiently retrieves lost, deleted, damaged and inaccessible data from Windows partitions having FAT & NTFS file systems.

Well I tried Phoenix and that worked pretty good. I just had one problem where it wouldn't read my HDD past this one sector so I'll try it again later. I also tried Kernal but I couldn't get that to work, it would just scan my HDD for 1 second and that was it. I tried to change settings, ect... to get by that but I couldnt

Files recovered with names like 001, etc. are files that were deleted from the computer before. Windows has this horrible habit of erasing the file name, once it's deleted. So no recovery program can tell you the name of a file which was deleted, unless you had it protected. I believe Windows' renaming is DNxxx, but it's been awhile since I've had to deal with the problem. I've had the same problem as you express here, but it happened to me a year ago and also a few months ago.
For protected files though deleted, the file name is preserved, and programs like Linux Live CD (GParted Magic, for example) or EASEUS can read the names. They don't change the names. So basically you're finding deleted files which were no longer protected -- meaning, the Recycle Bin was emptied, assuming you're on pre Win7 of Windows. (I don't know what Win7 does, since I won't upgrade past XP Pro.)

Hi Friends,
You query is very fine. Earlier we lost our all partitions and applied several commercial tools but the issues were same. Finally reached in hddguru forum where smone recommended "systools hard drive data recovery" tool. By installing and executing the same tool, we were able to get back whole data with original file name. I guess, once you should also go for this and check the output delivered by this tool.

In my experience, the corrupted drive could be damaged logically and mechanically. The logically damaged drive still can be fixed by reformatting. The inner data also is recoverable at the help of a data recovery tool. However, the mechanically damaged drive is often irreparable and the inner data is often irrecoverable.
However, fortunately, from your description, your drive is not mechanically damaged.
Therefore, to get back your data, you are supposed to opt for a proper data recovery tools out there. In fact, there are plenty of data recovery tools online. But, not all of them could restore your data completely. You should pay attention to this point.
If you have no ideas, I would recommend you to try some data recovery freeware, such as Recuva, iCare Data Recovery Free andTestDisk, etc.
Edit: If you don’t want to experience similar problem, remember to back up all your wanted data all the time.
