First, turn on a light and carefully inspect your windoze CD. Dampen a paper towel with window cleaner and clean it from the hub, straight outwards, all the way around it. Try the disk again.
Failing that try an external USB CD/DVD reader that DOES read your CD. Or get a new internal drive for the computer (they run about $18).

When you have windows and everything else re-installed, be sure and take a drive image of it. There are Linux tools to do that, like partimage or clonezilla.

Oh, and if a different computer will read it, rip it to ISO and burn it to CDR. Perhaps even DVD-R media.

Hi Spyder, Not to panic. First, got hrough this: http://www.ehow.com/...-xp-cd_rom.html. If taht doesn't help, then you need a new Optical drive. The CD & DVD lasers are on two different wave lengths, so you can have full function of the DVD and nothing with the CD or Vice Versa.
