I use an ION to PC scanner for negatives and slides, both color and black &white. I set the resolution as high as possible and the software package lets you do just about everything you need to get printable data. Yes, it will do B&W very well, as I've done around 100 slides and negatives in B&W. It renders some very sharp images but with the high resolution, creates some pretty large files of 10MB and bigger. This can be adjusted but for me, these are the last time the original slides/negatives will be needed. The Photo Impressions software from ArcSoft allows manipulation of the images in any way you choose. The only drawback some have mentioned was that the slide holder can only hold 4 slides and the negatives only 6. I don't scan every image so but it also makes a good viewer, only scanning the shots I want.
