I am troubleshooting a friends' Compaq laptop (Presario F700) with a AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-60. They have had issues with it shutting down. My leading theory at this point is that there are some temperature issues based upon their description of the issues. I also know that I need to clean it up and get current anti-virus on it. I am doing that right now.

At the moment, Avast Free is running a scan. While the scan is running, SpeedFan is showing about for 50 C to 55 C (Core & Temp1) with the CPU usage hanging around 10% to 25%. I will later keep an eye on the temps while running a movie in Netflix since that is where they say they have seen the problem most often (I want to get the malware scans done first since it has been running without current virus software for quite a while).

Anyway, what kind of temperature range should it be operating in?

At the moment, it does not seem to be an issue, but it is a fairly light load.

If I do find that temperatures are an issue, I might take apart the laptop to clean out the fan/heatsink assembly better (I did use some compressed air on the vents already). If I go to the set of actually removing the fan/heatsink assembly from the CPU (I don't really plan on this), do I use standard thermal paste? If so, how much? I have Arctic Silver 5.

Thanks

I think that's fairly normal for a laptop. My x120e's CPU/GPU idles at 50C, and under load I've seen it hit 80C. (when running a game - note that the CPU and the GPU are in the same chip here, an AMD E350) The machine's only a year old, I don't use it a whole lot, and the last time I took it apart (a few weeks ago) the fan and the vents were completely clean.

I would use stuff like AS5 if replying the CPU/heatsink assembly. However, I think some laptops use thermal pads - an older Dell Pentium M (or was it p4?) laptop that I took apart (I was trying to reseat something I think) used those, for example. That's the last thing I would try anyway - laptops are a pain to deal with there.

70C per core is the upper side of normal. However, they will actually hit 90C without question. I just wouldn't want to see the TL-60 climb beyond that. The Laptop CPU's are exposed die, so while you CAN use AS5, remember to take into account the smaller surface area and try to avoid excess, as AS5 is conductive. The best bet, is to use IC Diamond or OCZ Freeze on exposed die - when available.
