Unfortunately, no comparison to Ting's rates. In fact, where exactly is the bargain here?

That's not much of a bargain compared to other prepaid plans, such as tmobile's.

The bid difference here is the AT&T network versus T-Mobile or Sprint. Network matters people! Say what you will about AT&T, but if price were the only factor, Sprint, T-Mobile, MetroPCS etc would all be on top. They're clearly not, and for good reason. This actually is a great deal for one of the two best wireless networks in America. And it's GSM!

Actually, Network matters, but locally, WHICH network is 'best' is not so simple a question.

Where AT&T may be a 'miracle' where you are, where someone else spends the most time, Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile may serve much better.

Do you get assigned a different phone number with the new SIM card?

Do you get assigned a different phone number if you change SIM cards from your current carrier?

@Evildave - agreed. If you live under a MetroPCS tower and don't ever travel outside their coverage range or mind their lesser overall coverage, that would be cheaper. Same goes for Tmo, Sprint, Cricket, etc.

It's not really anything to argue. The market provides the proof: most Americans use either AT&T or Verizon, and those two networks (which are the most expensive) are growing while most others are struggling. That doesn't mean that they are the best choice for all. Just for most.

@FerdinandSalvacion - basically all wireless companies allow you to either get a new number or port in your existing number.

I called and asked as I'm looking to port my number in. You get to keep your phone number.

H2O wireless is a bit cheaper, but Straighttalk (AT&T sim option) is cheaper at $45 a month with good discounts for 6 and 12 month advance purchases.
