Most things 'cloud' are just recycling mainframe+terminals models and concepts from the 70's.

Just take any ancient curses app for VT100/telnet/ssh, and slap a prettier full color pixel GUI on top that requires a broadband connection and a web browser to use, then stick 'cloud' in its name.

Instant 'cloud' app.

Or strip the brains out of an existing PC app and replace it with client code, and move the brains and storage to a server, and sell it monthly as a 'service', rather than a one-time app license. Oh, and if you stop paying, you lose your data.

Instant 'cloud' app.

Or just hack your PC app so it has to connect to a server and get 'permission' to run, and force it to store and retrieve all of its data from a server by default.

Instant 'cloud' app.

You're welcome!

Well stated. Cloud has become such a buzzword that it is losing its real value.

I think the key with cloud whether public, private or hybrid is that SMBs in particular need to focus in on finding the offerings that best pair with their short-, mid- and long-term needs. No matter how you look at it cloud is a journey and needs to provides the purchaser with new levels of efficiency, flexibility, scalability, etc. There needs to be value.

When selecting a partner, its important to find ones who are not going to try to pigeonhole you into an offering. Instead a real partner should be willing to provide advice needed to drive you forward even if the technology/solution suggested isn't theirs. Seek out assessment opportunities like the one VMWare offers (j.mp/vmvirt) as the first step to starting the journey.
