Gaming's Classic Spirit Finds an HD Outlet on PlayStation 3
source:1up.com

Quote

Gritty grey grimness. Bald space marines. Massive tree-trunk-like men rendered with oily ropiness by Unreal Engine 3. These are the images that dominate current-gen games -- and why not? Clearly, they're what sells to the core gaming audience, and publishers would be fools to ignore the tastes of the masses. But too much of any single thing can grow old over time, and for some gamers (myself included) the relentless badassery of HD gaming fare can feel almost suffocating. Sometimes, it would be nice to have a little humor to leaven the darkness -- humor that doesn't revolve around how hilarious it is to curbstomp a bad guy's skull like a meat balloon -- without being all cutesy or ironic about it. How about a little earnestness for once?

Thankfully, both Sony and Namco Bandai are content to be fools, bringing two beautiful, colorful, sincerely whimsical games to PlayStation 3: Sanzaru's Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and Level-5's Ni No Kuni. Neither of these games are new or unexpected, but despite being known quantities they stood out at a recent industry-wide pre-E3 event by virtue of going against the grain. They lack the seriousness and realism of the other big-budget games on display, yet they aren't aimed specifically at young audiences, either. Both Sly and Ni No Kuni recall a vanished era of games (we called it "The PlayStation 2 age" -- you might have learned about it in school) when developers could take a lighthearted approach to design without being apologetic about it.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch Arrives On January 22, 2013
source:siliconera.com

Quote

In April, Namco Bandai delayed Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch from a 2012 title to early 2013. Fortunately, the wait for Level-5′s epic RPG won’t be too long. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch will be available in North America on January 22, 2013. The English version will have extra content, most likely the bonuses from Ni no Kuni: All in One Edition.

A new trailer gives us a taste of the English voice cast and it sounds pretty good so far!

Dark Souls DLC Coming to Consoles
source:dualshocknexus.com

Posted Image

Quote

When Namco Bandai announced the Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for PC, many fans who bought the console version were disappointed. They were disappointed because there was no confirmation of the extra content from the PC version making its way toward consoles. That has all changed.

Namco Bandai recently announced that the additional content available in Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be released for consoles for $14.99 on PSN and 1200 Microsoft Points for Xbox Live. There is no set release date, but this downloadable content will release sometime this winter. It has also been announced that Dark Souls will be available for Steam. This is good news for PC gamers who were unhappy about the GFWL version of Dark Souls.

Tales of Graces f Review (9/10)
source:lvl30.com

Quote

Good: Story, Graphics, Gameplay Mechanics
Bad: Slow start, Monsters that come from a toddlers nightmare, Repetitive landscapes.

Quote

Tales of Graces f begins with two young brothers, Asbel and Hubert, who find a mysterious girl while exploring a place called Lhant Hill. After some discussion with this girl, she has no recollection of who she is or where she is from. She cannot remember any other important details that would help identify her. With this information in mind, eleven year-old Asbel decides that it is too dangerous to leave her by herself and takes the mysterious girl back to his hometown to request the help of the townsfolk in identifying her. After no one in town is able to identify her or give him information that helps him identify who she might be, Asbel decides to take personal responsibility for her. Asbel names her Sophie based off of the Sopheria flowers that grow in the field they found her in. Asbel and Sophie, along with their other friends, begin an epic journey in the making.

Sony brings backwards compatibility to PlayStation with Gaikai deal
source:gamesindustry.biz

Quote

First and third-party games to be streamed to hardware

Sony's rumoured cloud gaming deal with Gaikai is to allow current-generation hardware to play PlayStation 2 and PSone games via a streaming solution, GamesIndustry International understands.

According to sources, the service will offer first-party games and be open to third-party publishers to sell back catalogue to players. The partnership is likely to be announced at E3 next week as part of Sony's conference on Monday.

Gaikai already has an extensive portfolio of video game partners that have been on board with CEO David Perry's vision since the service first went live, including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and Capcom, but all titles so far have been for the PC format.

The appetite for PlayStation 2 games has been proven with collected HD releases of titles including Silent Hill, God of War, Devil May Cry and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

The streaming games company has also signed up retailers like GAME and Best Buy, services such as YouTube, TV manufacturer LG and social network Facebook, and is expected to announce further partnerships next week.

It's not yet clear which Sony devices beyond the PlayStation 3 would get a Gaikai-supported game streaming service, but it could extend to Sony branded TVs and tablets.

A backwards compatibility offering at this stage in the PS3's lifecycle would also allow Sony to test streaming games before it goes fully next-gen with the release of the PlayStation 4.

Sony's history with backwards compatibility is patchy. The PlayStation 3 originally allowed gamers to play older PlayStation 2 and PSone games, but support for PS2 games was dropped as the PS3 went through a number of different iterations. PSone and PlayStation 2 games are currently available for download on the PlayStation Store.

Both Sony Computer Entertainment and Gaikai declined to comment when contacted.

Another GTA V Easter Egg Found in Max Payne 3
source:dualshocknexus.com
Posted Image

Quote

It was just a few days ago when a huge Grand Theft Auto V Easter egg involving in game jets were found in Max Payne 3. Since then people have been searching Max Payne 3 for even more GTA V clues and it appears that another one has been found.

While this recent find isn't as big as the jets Easter egg it still shouldn't go unnoticed; after all, the bicycle is the greatest getaway vehicle in the Grand Theft Auto series. All jokes aside, a sharp eyed user by the name of sanex4 has found the latest Grand Theft Auto V Easter egg in Max Payne 3. Take a look at the image below.

The above picture may not seem like something special, all it appears to be is a broken down bicycle propped against a building. Well it seems like Rockstar still has a great sense of humor because this looks exactly like the same bicycle found in the Grand Theft Auto V trailer.

Sony Teases "The Future of PlayStation Plus"
source:mediastreet.spruz.com

It appears that the ongoing rumors about Sony's soon-to-be revealed PlayStation Plus "revamp" are true.

Sony has now displayed the teasing information for all to see on the PlayStation website. Although it only manages to tell people to tune in to their pre-E3 2012 Press Conference this Monday, it does also mention "the future of PlayStation Plus". Of course, with this now public on their website, talks around the internet regarding the possible GaiKai or OnLive deal will continue to rage on all the way into the Sony pre-E3 press conference at 6:00PM Monday afternoon.

Spec Ops - the most disturbing gaming scene this year?
source:msbox-world.com

Quote

Spec Ops: The Line might be under the radar for many, but before you dismiss this Gears of War/Uncharted cover shooter clone based on the short demo, there's a bit more under the surface that aims to pull you in and never let go. With a story influenced by Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", the game is filled with dark and conspiring moments for Martin Walker (Nolan North) and Delta Squad. Take a look at the video for one such scenario which tries the resolve of the characters in game, and makes for testing imagery for those playing. This isn't just faceless shooting of individuals - fighting has an impact and its casualties.

Note: Minor Spoilers

E3 2012: The New Spider-Man Game Looks Amazing
source:IGN.com
Posted Image

Quote

But I'm getting off track. Playing The Amazing Spider-Man is where it really shines. People flipped when Beenox’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time didn't feature an open world. This time Beenox is unleashing Spider-Man, giving the developer a chance to have Spider-Man swing around New York -- and like I said, it's awesome, but there's more to it than that.

The camera puts you right on Spidey's back, but the moves at your disposal also make you a smarter Spider-Man. You know how in these games you take Spider-Man to the top of the Empire State building and then try to get on the tip of the antenna but inevitably Spider-Man wigs out on the way up or the camera shifts and you start walking the wrong way? How Spider-Man looks like a bumbling idiot trying to get to the tip of a flagpole? Web Rush does away with that.

With Web Rush, time slows down and we get to see possible points Mr. Parker can zoom to -- traffic lights, water reservoirs and more all light up on the screen. You just pick one and Spider-Man shoots over to it. It's an elegant solution to navigating New York like the superhero we all know.
