That is just a stereo type often used by people who have few friends or few people close to them. Facebook is a way to keep in touch. So instead of sending a text to say 20+ people, it's easier to post it on FB (or Twitter) and talk about it there. It's not really much different than a Forum, it just has real names.

That still does not explain why people post stuff on Facebook that no one needs to know (eg getting a coffee).

You are older than 40. Not to worry. Just the way of the world today. Incidentally, the scenario you describe is more twitter than facebook.

Nice stereotype. I am not even 30 yet, and don't see the point. I grew up with the real farking internet, pre-waste-my-freaking-time-with-bs internet.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov

Facebook's privacy policies are 'bass ackwards'... the default should be total privacy with the member opting out.. and NO one.. not one reporter out there ever makes mention of that.. it's almost like a sacrilege to do so.. well folks after the FB IPO last week and its dismal public startup.. the FB insiders/ 'friends' have pulled off the biggest scam in internet history on the 'close your eyes FB public'.. a joke.. the insiders knew all the troubles and that the glitter had rolled off FB.. so they decided to go public.. grab their money and run...the banks bought into it because all they saw was the money... and they got burnt..

FB will disappear.. ( stop laughing).. just as MySpace went to the burial grounds.. another new con game will reappear for the masses to grab onto...

This is really just more evidence that facepalm is overrated. Hopefully some of those companies affected by that irrelivent like button will get the message and remove it.

This is all BS and crap.
I have never used and will never use this piece of sh*t called Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg and company can go to hell.
My Internet use has been and will always be fun and enjoyable without stupid writers writing garbage stories like this.

A big positive in social media involves Arab Spring

It's been many moons since I've seen 30, but although Facebook and the like seem just silly to me personally, I can understand where the younger generations are coming from.

That'll never happen, For Facebook, YOU are the commodity. Its profitability is entirely dependent on the sharing of pages, and yes, whatever personal info you post.
