I have been having some problems lately with Outlook 2002 so I thought I would try "Detect and Repair" on their Help tab. This claims to fix errors in all Office files.

I told it not to restore the original shortcuts

And not to replace any custom settings with the originals defaults.

In due time it asked me to insert the original Office install disk.

Then it said it did an install-config of Office, reported success and went home.

After waiting around I finally ran Outlook again, and if it made any Repairs, I can't see them.

Any ideas? Should I have told it to kill my custom settings or shortcuts? Is this just a scam, or what?.

You could uninstall & reinstall.

Try creating a new user account.

GMail's web interface is very nice, too. Got the whole calendar integration & everything. As long as you can launch a web browser, on whatever machine, it will generally work.

It'll collect your email from other accounts, and send as those accounts, too.

Detect and Repair is often useful but it doesn't fix everything. You haven't said what it was that led you to run this utility. Uninstalling as Dave suggested should leave your pst file intact, so when you reinstall, Outlook should find it again. If you still have the problem then it is likely with the pst file, in which case, you can try running SCANPST to repair that file.

Just to be sure, copy your pst file to a safe location before you uninstall.
