The market is already covered with Pages, Numbers and Keynote.

If Numbers would not render my spreadsheets useless I would agree with you. But stripping formatting and formulas makes it kind of pointless. I am just glad Apple refunded me my $$$

If MS is smart, it will offer two versions of Office--one for tablets (touch-screen focused, no keyboard) and one for laptops and desktops (keyboard focused). Don't repeat the mistake MS has made with Windows-8.

"Metro is Microsoft's controversial smartphone-style interface for its upcoming Windows 8 operating system."

First of all, I wouldn't call it controversial, I would call it radical, as this does not imply a negative bias. Controversial does.

And it's not really a smartphone-style interface; a touch-based interface would be more accurate, as it is intended for use on tablets and other touch-based PCs as opposed to a Smartphone (even though a lightweight version of Metro is part of Windows Phone)

it's too bad that they aren't launching a version for android, because the suite that I have on my Android tablet is terrible.

The SURF just squashed this possibility. OFFICE for the IPAD is a pipe dream. If you want office and you want a tablet. One word SURFACE. Nobody saw that coming.

Not sure whether this is spam or just illegible gobbledygook, but either way, there is no version of OpenOffice.org available for iPad.

No, I mean it's not like Microsoft have been coming up with new tablet computing concepts every couple of years for the past decade or so, or anything.

Apple sells 100 million iPads. If Microsoft sell Office suite for 39.99$ this is approximately 3 billion of revenue for them, if every one of the iPad owners buy that applications. If Microsoft hope that this owner gone buy Microsoft tablet only to have advantage of Office application, that not gone happen in term of economical efficiency. So the best for consumers will be to have choice to buy iPad or Surface and use Microsoft Office suite on them, which in both cases will bring profit to Microsoft and satisfaction for the users. If Microsoft product doesn't appear in Apple store for the goodness of costumers then probably will be very good idea if Open office community fill the gap of good Office application suite.
