Perfect! This was the one feature it was missing. The ability to download a map ahead of time. When i am traveling in Europe I will not have a data plan, but will have occassional wifi access.

The ability to download maps has been in Google Maps for some time as part of the Settings>Labs function. Just sayin'.

Sorta... it had the ability to hold a small area (10 sq miles?) in cache. The new offline piece seems to suggest that you can download an entire country ahead of time, much like with Nokia maps, and it will use navigation. This is a substantial improvement.

But Wednesday’s announcements come with some bad news (for Google) from Apple. The Wall Street Journal is reporting it has confirmed reports that it will ditch Google Maps for its own mapping app later this year. Apple will launch its own mapping service as part of it new iOS6 operating system for iPhones and iPads, the Journal reports. Today, Google Maps is the default map service in iPhone and iPad.

Seems to me that that's bad news for iDevice users more than Google. I'll wait to see what Apple is going to be offering, but I have seriously doubts that Apple will be able to even come close to matching the functionality that Google is currently offering.

There is no way apple can compete with Google,at anything.

Google should sue Apple. An application that shows images of the street layout in a particular city, and allows you to find directions from one place to another? That sounds just like Google Maps. Those copycats are stealing from Google. How dare they! Sue sue sue! :P
