I used both Skydrive and Google Drive and I have used Dropbox. All 3 of them requires you storing the files you want to sync into their "folder". I can see how it would be great for Microsoft to have this functionality but I just don't see why they would. Is it a significant thing that will make people switch to SkyDrive? I have no issues with storing things I want synced into the "folder" and resetting all my settings (libraries, backup, etc.), but I'm sure some people will agree with you. Well hopefully your wish is granted by Microsoft.

SugarSync does exactly that - syncs any folder.

I was pleased Microsoft finally got around to producing their desktop Skydrive app, but have been disappointed. It only runs interactively so you have to be logged on to sync files, and also as above it does not natively support syncing files outside of its designated local folder. The 2 GB upload limit and other strange problems I had uploading large amounts of data, I was disappointed and expected more from Microsoft! Unfortunately I am finding I like features of SugarSync, Google Drive, and SkyDrive but none of them provide everything I need in one solution.

Sugarsync is a similar service to Skydrive and Dropbox and it allows you to sync any folder, like you describe, without needing a plugin plus it does put an indicator on the folder so you know it is in sync. Highly recommended. They will start you off with 5gb for free.

Found another downside to this newliy installed program, when I used the app to tell my docs folder to sync with skydrive, it crashes the skydrive app.

yet another downside - after some files did sync using the program (note my previous post) I updated a folder that was set to sync by adding a .txt test file inside a test folder to see if it would update/sync to skydrive and it will not - it seems this program is all for naught.
GO TEAM VENTURE!!!

I recommend SugarSync. It's sad Microsoft FINALLY upgraded SkyDrive and then only set it at par with the other major competitors (with the exception of SugarSync, which for some reason people often forget.)

But it's done via symbolic links , which creates double content on my HD, right ? Other words it creates copy of the linked folder in SkyDrive folder instead of syncing it (as SugarSync does). It is a good solution but still not perfect...
