Buy a PC. They are a way better deal, and you usually also get an optical drive (unless you get an ultrabook).

"It feels like a nice shift from the current Pro, which is what I'd call a ‘carry it around twice per week, tops’ laptop. More often than that, especially with the traditional 15-inch MacBook Pro, and it really drags you down. I could see carrying this new, thinner Pro around with you several days per week, or maybe to and from work on a daily subway commute at a stretch"

This comment made me laugh. He obviously doesn't work very much lol.

until now, I have been a PC user. This computer is what will make it worth while to make the switch. Well Done Apple. Now everyone else in the world has their work cut out for them, in trying to make something just as good.

Its a joke really. Apple products are superior to everything else. Yes they cost more money up front, but my girl friend still has the black Mac Book, and a G4 Mac mini, and still running strong without a single upgrade. There is something to be said for that! You get what you pay for, and I'm sold!

The RAM and SSD drive are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded as such.

No thanks.

From a tech-only perspective, this is quite a feat - even the Apple haters would have to agree.

Optical drive, who cares? I haven't needed to use my drive (on my Mac or my PC) in about a year. For those who do need it, a USB DVD drive is about $50. Buy it once and use it on any device you want, going forward.

Wouldn't you pay $50 more for a laptop that was thinner and lighter?

The hard drive can be.

Wrong, they are not superior to everything else, because they don't cater to ALL markets. In the workstation market for example, there are Lenovo W series and HP Eliete products that lead their market, and Apple has NOTHING to compete with them.

Also, for the record, I paid $1000 less for my W520 than a MBP 15, got a machine of similar power (I don't care about the spec sheet much), better build quality (try standing on your Apple once - then check youtube for Lenovo torture tests), and a display that Apple couldn't compete with (until Retina that is).

The ram it, SSD it NOT. Hit up ifixit.

This is simply not true. Build to spec a similar pc at least a high definition screen that is similar size. I did and the pc was very close in price minus the nicer screen. No thanks. By the way the non user replaceable is making its way into the pc market as well. This is not strictly in the mac world...

This article is about the Retina version. The Retina version is available only with SSD and it is soldered in. Furthermore, the SSD and the RAM modules are of a proprietary design so even if you were of a mind to attempt soldering, you probably could not obtain them. This is according to Fixit.

I won't buy Apple or Microsoft products. I build my own desktops, etc. and repair all computers in my very rural area. A couple of my neighbors have Macbooks etc. to match what's available at school. As a company, I don't care for much of what they do, their business practices. Warranty for instance, some items REQUIRE being brought into an Apple service center for repair, they won't let a person fix it yourself, and they won't even let you ship it in for repair (my neighbors found that out the hard way, the service center wouldn't even let them ship it in). What that meant for my neighbors was a 180 mile round trip to an Apple store for repair, I don't see how that is acceptable. Also, losing the optical drive is nice, and buying an external drive is easy, but there's a bigger problem here. MUCH of the US does not have access to acceptable broadband, myself included. If computer manufacturers stop including drives, other industries will start dwindling, Blurays will slowly become obsolete, etc. As it is, the very best I can get is 7.5GB for $50 per month by satellite. If I were to buy an Apple, and say upgrade the OS, It used to be possible to buy an upgrade for less than $30. Now that's the price of the download. If you want media, something like $80 (just guessing, but it's higher), for a USB drive. I don't see how a premium of that much over the old cost is good for consumers. Things like that, software download purchases, the suggestion is often to just go to a hotspot to download things if you don't have good enough internet at home. For some of us, a 60 mile round trip to get to the nearest hotspot of 756Kbps max is not convenient every time a person would want to do such things.

/end rant
