This is the first time in a long time that Microsoft has won a major media victory over Apple. This was supposed to be Apple's big week, but this tablet rumor ended up dominating the weekend after. The question remains, however, whether Microsoft can turn this media victory into a market share victory.

Apple is winning with it's products because its software is much better than Microsoft's. The latter would do much better improving its software, rather than extending its second rate abilities into hardware. Apple, on the other hand, could lose in the end, perhaps to Google, because of its insistence on controlling the whole package; that is why it lost to PCs the first time round after all...

Total BS coming from someone who's IQ isn't even in double figures. I hope they don't let you vote.

There speaks someone who does not have a clue. Laughable actually.

I loved the Zune when it worked. I hope MS can do the as well with their new tablet. Does anyone know if I can connect the MS tablet to my Windows Vista pc? Love Vista too. Keep'em coming....

That was a different time. Apple has been able to hit homeruns with it's iPhone, iPad and Macbook Air designs because they had years of experience designing both hardware and software. Other companies can sit back and copy but that doesn't put them in the drivers seat. Android is successful for phones but does not make Google hardly any profits, and they have not been successful with tablets. MS has not been able to compete in either category. MS needs to have a design team working with their software team to develop new products to be successful in the future. Whether or not they are able to grab a foothold in the tablet market, I think it's the right move.

This is not true at all. In fact, while Windows has less and less virus problems mac has more and more. Is the XBox a Virus, malware, spyware. ailenware, trojan, adware MAGNET? I would be very excited to see a MS tablet.

I totally agree with everything said but I am worried about one thing; will all of the hardware makers like Dell, Toshiba, HP, etc. bail on MS if they start making their own hardware. Also, MS has said before that they will not become a hardware company, and that was in the las year or two

Uhm, no. Only an idiot can truly get those sorts of issues. Something tells me you're one of those idiots.

The other hardware manufacturers have nothing to bail to. Apple won't license OSX and Windows is the only other credible option.

(And before someone brings up Linux, QNX, ... Stop. Don't do it. I said 'credible' option and I meant it. If Linux were a credible option, the other manufacturers would already be using it. And they AREN'T!)

Strategically, I think it would be a great move for Microsoft.

Having said that, I think their main focus should be on Enterprise where they can offer the business tablet solution that everybody had hoped RIM would deliver. I have a lot of doubts about Microsoft's ability to turn out a differentiated design in the consumer space. Does anyone think Microsoft can develop a better tablet than Samsung? Does anyone think that a Galaxy Tab would be better if it ran Windows?

"Why Melissa J. Perenson should be fired and never write for PCWORLD again"

Um MS just spent 10s (if no hundreds of millions) getting away from hardware and changing all its hardware to services like ZUNE.. and KIN.

Its much easier, much more available, much more cost effective, as well as cost effective marketing, to allow others to use your software.

Apple is a 1 trick poney.
THERE IS NO REASON, NO FACTORY, NO WANT TO COMPETE AGAINST ITS FRIENDS LIKE SONY, HP, DELL, SAMSUNG - who are not only willing but WANT Windows 8 RT.

So please, stop pushing this story that Apple and Android mentally disabled bloggers have given you !! It isnt a leak, its BS!

If you ask me, Microsoft missed the train. If they had one already two years ago, then it would be relevant to stay in the game. It doesn't matter what name brand or iOS comes or goes, it's when it comes and where it's going that counts. Apple is clearly the king of tablets and the rest are just on the bandwagon picking up the people who can't afford the real McCoy.

Being a "Virus, malware, spyware. ailenware, trojan, adware MAGNET" would imply it being a huge success, would it not?

Great concept. Do I detect some apprehension that Windows-8 is not going to the the "blow you socks off OS" that Microsoft would like to have your believe? All that R&D needs to be repaid somehow.
