Except for the first Surface in 2007.
"On Monday, Microsoft shocked the tech world by announcing a pair of Windows 8 tablets, both dubbed Microsoft Surface.................And yet, anyone who's paid attention to the tech industry for the last five years shouldn't be too surprised."
How could the world be shocked by this news, if they shoulds be too surprised?

You don't see the benefit? Ask the iP4 owners, all of whom will be able to upgrade to iOS6 when it is released, while most owners of top of the line Android Phones are still waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich (AOS4)even though Jelly Bean (AOS4.3) is already queued up. Or iPad owners who have all upgraded to iOS5 while many tablet owners are still stuck in 2.3 with no hope of ICS, much less Jelly Bean.
Then there is the accessory market. The iPhone and iPad have more accessories available for them than every Android device combined. And that's because there is one form factor, one port style. Apple's control over the hardware has meant standardization between generations of devices and allowed the accessory market to flourish.
Personally I have never owned an iPhone or iPad. I have an EVO 4G, and before that a Palm Pre, a Blackberry and a Palm Treo 650. I am no iFanboy. But even so i have no problem seeing the benefot of controling your hardware.

Nobody puts much though into what standard to use for door dimensions, Home Depot or Lowes. Similarly, in less than 5 years people will simply assume Android is the standard on top of which they develop software for tablets, phones, computers, microwave ovens, coffee makers, remote control cars, boats.. etc.

1. I wouldn't consider the table-top Surface to be a personal computer--I don't know any individual who owns one--but we can agree to disagree there.
2. Heheh. I thought someone might call me out on that. I think the shock was in the out-of-the-blue nature of the announcement, and the fact that none of the rumors really had it right. But when you actually consider what was announced, it makes a lot of sense.

I think it's already happening. It's not uncommon to hear of people who are reluctant to switch between iPhone/Android/Windows Phone because they've already invested in the ecosystem. That consumer lock-in is exactly what the tech giants are competing to get. I'm actually not too crazy about this, and have tried to remain somewhat agnostic (I primarily use an Android phone, an iPad and a Windows desktop and laptop, and use platform-independent services such as MOG for music and Kindle for books when possible), but that's a story for another day.

Are you serious? Microsoft Surface is a full pledge pc. why would you compare it to something so inferior. in terms of specs?.. can the Ipad download torrent and watch porn on the same time without tweaking.. [censored] idiot.. comparing oranges to peanuts.

You hit the nail right on the head. The only people benefiting from this are the companies themselves. I personally like my choice of product. If only a select few are controlling the market we will soon find that the technology advancement with these products will likely slow it pace due to the lack of mass competition.

Is that how you decide on what product to buy, how many accessories are available for it?
As far as the argument about OS upgrading; I own a Samsung Galaxy SII 4G Touch and with just a small amount of know how one could be running ICS(AOS4.0.3), I have been for a good while, even though it officially should be running Gingerbread (AOS2.3.6). In addition if you look at the new features in the iOS, whether in version 5 or 6, Apple is merely just giving options that are already present on many phones to date(with the exception of Siri). They just have ingenious marketing strategies that lead people to believe that they are the first to do so.

It's 'full-fledged' not 'full pledge'... you need to be more careful about this sort of thing before you go ahead and call someone else an idiot.
