Based on my limited knowledge of chemistry, it seems to me that no matter the level of efficiency, the reaction can only last a certain amount of time based on the amount of chemicals involved in the reaction.
Kind of like a kerosine lamp, you only have light as long as you have fuel being burned up. I'm not sure how practical this will be except for short-term emergencies when alternative sources of power or light aren't available.
