The ipad is just a toy.

Unfortunately, the Samsung 7 slate is an excellent device that may get lost in the Surface media blitz. Every article I have read about Surface asks can Microsoft deliver a full windows product in this form factor. Well, Samsung already has. As the official win 8 demo device, it was undoubltably the inspiration for Surface.

Understandably, lots of people want to compare the Surface to the iPad. And for the Windows RT Surface, that makes sense. But not so much for the Surface Pro. I suspect that MS will have a hard time bringing the Surface Pro price down to the iPad's price, especially with the keyboard (and most likely mouse that you'll need for all that legacy software you want to run). Apple has large profit margins and could reduce prices if needed. (Thanks MS for the competition.)
A better comparison will be low end ultrabooks which will also run Windows, have better keyboards, integrated trackpads and more ports. If the Surface Pro isn't significantly cheaper and/or lighter or if its battery life is much shorter, the ultrabooks will clean its clock.

Microsoft has been trying for 10 years to make a PC into a Tablet. This latest attempt is not much better. People think they want a PC in a little 10" Tablet. But when they try to use the software that is designed for a larger screen designed with a mouse in mind they will go back to a Laptop for that experience. The RT may do better.

The iPad is a smartphone in a tablet form factor. There's nothing wrong with that, but that's the truth of it. Both, the Surface RT & Surface Pro are more than that. Surface RT is a netbook in tablet form (though hopefully more reliable), and Surface Pro is an ultrabook in tablet form (which I'm calling an "ultraslate.")

Even so, for these things to sell & grab market share, Microsoft should price the RT below the iPad, and the Pro just under the ultrabooks. That could prove to make them irresistible this holiday season.

Disagree 1000%. This fangrrl has a use for a slim and small computer - the Pro - outside work it fulfills the mission of a laptop, but in a far smaller form factor and a nicer UI than an Ultrabook (inside work, the iPad is useless like a glass hammer). I've *got* an iPad. Its a crippled toy and without the sack of adapters I ended up buying, useless for even the most basic task I can throw at it - uploading photos to the internet. Its a good thing I sprung for the 3g version, it'd be totally useless out of WiFi range otherwise. So what if the Surface is a gnat's hair thicker and a half an apple's weight heavier - it sports actual input and output ports, a SSHD, RAM and an i5 processor. The USB, SD and HDMI alone make it a far more versatile unit than any number of adapters Apple and its partners can deliver.

So it's great that the Surface Pro will be available to you though. Choice is good, to date it appears that most consumers are less concerned about doing work than a new digital paradigm.

Use of the word "toy" demonstrates a lack of understanding of or interest in that new paradigm. I work on my first generation iPad daily. I even do a little design on it and write letters and email, or and the occasional spreadsheet, the work product is easily transferred to my desktops and laptops. But I readily admit that heavy duty work needs to be done on desktop or laptop. I guess I don't have any burning desire to have a single device that does everything.

Sorry, but this "toy" nonsense is arrogant, offensive, and just plain wrong. Just because a device doesn't meet your needs does not make it a "toy". The iPad successfully replaced my laptop, but I don't go around claiming that laptops are just toys simply because they don't offer what I need. If you're chopping vegetables, do you buy a quality kitchen knife, or a Swiss Army knife because it does more? If you want something that can cut stuff and open a bottle of wine, the Swiss Army knife is great, but that doesn't diminish the value of a good chef's knife.

You've just proven the earlier post about tech-head arrogance. FYI, I've always found Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXPress etc to be pretty formidable tools on my Macs (You do realize that Mac has always run those applications... right?).

Both my iPod Touch and my iPad do exactly what I bought them for... to consume media and display my creative work.
