Uhh, guys, check the description on this - there's a typo: "Microsoft's announcement of a next-generation Windows Phone 8 smartphone OS raises questions of teh role of its mobile partner Nokia."

Why does everyone make a big deal that 7.5 phones will not upgrade to 8. My android phone and it will not upgrade to 2.3. ZOMG, poor HTC, android screwed them for releasing 2.3 that will not work on my 2.2.

You're telling me the newer mobile OS doesn't work on older phones? I don't understand why they don't just use a software update to add a front-facing camera and dual-core functionality.

Seriously, there's a 7.8 upgrade for the backward compatible features, and an 8.0 for the full feature set. Seems pretty logical to me.

Windows phone lost me to the iPhone last year because they wouldn't support Outlook syncing. In no rush to go back, especially after comparing Apple support to Microsoft. Heck, I'll probably move up to the iPhone 5 this fall and give the 4s to the Mrs. Then we'll sit tight till there's a major reason to change - market is starting to mature...

You can root your phone and upgrade it I did with my old HTC phone. You can probably go to Ice Cream sandwich. Android didn't screw HTC HTC screwed HTC by not upgrading their phones. You an upgrade it on your own no problem.

Microsoft should've copied Apple's playbook and just upgrade everything to the newest OS, even if it means slowdowns that makes the devices unusable. Then, its users will have to buy new handsets.

Oh wait, they're not that crazy.

"..analysts predicted fallout from OEM partners who would now have to compete against Microsoft while also paying to license Windows 8 for their own tablets.."

OEM's will just:

Copy surface hardware

and sell them with

Latest Android OS ! !

Then Windows 8 will lose out

to Android in the tablet PC market..

I suspect you mean Google Android. I hear they are selling like hotcakes compared to Microsoft's mobile OS.

Older IPhone cannot upgrade from a older OS to a new one unless you root it which you run the chance of bricking your phone. What most Apple fan do is sell their old phone at a lost and buy the new one when it comes out every 6 to 12 months. Usually the new one is just catching up with the competition (Android) and have minor upgrades.

Microsoft is using the same playbook and everyone is up in arms for this. Think about it, do you really need those new extra features on Windows phone? I don't and I bought a HTC Windows phone. Couldn't buy the Nokia because every time I try it was out of stock. Beside after two years of my contract there will be a new must have phone with xzy features. Who cares, unless you just want to show off.

As for the Windows tablet, Microsoft is telling their hardware partners to offer a high quality product or get out of the market. There are some good Android tablets out there but there is even a large portion of trash Android tablet out there. LG is dropping out of making a Windows tablet, but then they never really made a good Android tablet either. HP, Dell, Lenovo and Samsumg will build a Windows tablet because they know if they get the enterprise market for their product they will hit the jackpot.

If you look at Microsoft's history, you will see that they have always been mercenary re: Software vs Hardware. If you owned a Windows 3.11 machine, and you wanted to try and run Windows 95...... What a joke. Try to Run Windows 98 on a Windows 95 machine, slow as a snail and BSOD all the time. It's been that way throughout the company's forward development. They tune their software to the latest upcoming hardware, and to hell with those that have come before. Nokia will lose out in this partnership because they made the fatal assumption that Microsoft would act in the interest of consumers, and business partners. Microsoft has always and ever moved in the direction of how badly Steve Ballmer's Balls itch. I sincerely hope that this latest arrogance on MS part, in every area, to attempt to restrict users to ONLY what MS offers will blow up in their faces, and leave a smoking hole in Redmond Oregon.
