Hi, my son attempted to install Linux over my XP installation and now I would like to recover data from the drive. I would love to not have to buy software for this as I don't anticipate having to do this often. I am able to see the files using the demo mode of some of the commercial packages that do this, but I have not been able to find something that is open source to help me. BTW, I did try testdisk and diskpartd but it was unable to see the files

any advice

You can use this tool:

It is free and it works well.
Windows 8 is a useless OS that Microsoft released that has many flaws and bugs. DO NOT USE IT. Use Windows XP or Windows 7.

If you have another Windows machine, put the hard drive in it, and run Recuva on it. (see this: http://www.piriform....formatted-disks)
