As to the New Tab thingy. Tab Mix Plus fixes this for me. With the add-on installed, go to Options, Tabs, Tab Mix Plus Options, New Tabs, then for Load On New Tabs, choose which tab style is displayed(I chose Blank Page). Apply, Close. OK. You may need to restart Firefox afterwards. It also controls alot of other things relating to tabs.

With both Firefox and Thunderbird, it is getting to the point that just turning the program off and restarting it is not enough to install new add ons. You actually have to restart Windows and then when it comes up, the add ons will work OK. I tried to set Yahoo.com as the default start page on Firefox 13, and if kept defaulting to open tab even though the options showed that the start page was listed as Yahoo.com. After restarting the computer, this function worked OK, and I was back in business. Just remember, if a change to either of these programs cause a part of it not to work properly, just completely restart the computer before trying an additional troubleshooting.
