PC is Dell Inspirion 6000 laptop circa 2005.
2GB Ram
Came with XP Home Edition and 512 Ram.

It became necessary to re-install Windows, so on the re-install,
I installed XP Professional instead, believing it to be the better product.

Everything but the SD Card reader works.

We use mainly 4GB SD Cards - nothing bigger.
I saw a hotfix on the Microsoft site but was afraid to install. Microsoft
warns that the fix is for a specific problem. Not sure just what problem ????

The SD Card Reader does NOT show up in My Computer

It DOES show up in Device Manager.

But the message "Device Can't Start (error 10) is given.

Tried to reinstall the device; Windows recognizes the "new" device;
but the available drivers don't do the job.

Can you suggest a driver that might work? And of course your comments too please.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise,

John

@johnpoiron

Have You Tried To Download The Specific Drivers For Your Machine, From The DELL Site Itself ?

Have You Tried To Download The Program 'SLIMDRIVERS FREE', From The VERSIONTRACKER / DOWNLOAD / CNET Site ?

Good Luck.

What happens if you update the driver from device manager and let it use the Windows Update one? Also, what if you install it as a (standard disk drives) Disk Drive or a (Generic) SD Storage Card? (you have to uncheck 'show compatible hardware' for this)

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, tried the Dell site - once via mozilla fire fox and once via IE8. The site was not working for me.

Thank you for the tip on SLIMDRIVERS FREE.

Thank you for getting back to me.

Just tried your suggestion and discovered the following:

Device Manager does not show an SD Card reader now.
In my first post, I reported that Device Mgr DID show the SD Card reader; but this was with an SD Card in the drive.

When the drive is empty, no mention of an SD Card device in Device Mgr.

So ... no success so far.

Just loaded SlimDrivers.

It seems to work; it found several out of date drivers.

None of its findings indicated any MISSING drivers.

And nothing in the list seem appropriate for an SD Card Reader.

I'm at a loss. Can you comment further?

Unfortunately Some Programs Only Provide Information For Devices With Already Working Drivers, But Not For Devices That Still Have Not Any Working Ones.

That Card Reader Came With Your Machine, Right ?

Try To Access The DELL Site With A Computer From A Friend Of Yours.

I Can Access DELL For A Lot Of Drivers For Your Specific Machine, But I Really Did Not Find There Any Driver For Any Card Reader.

That CNET Site Has Some More Free Programs For Drivers, Like The One I Told You - If You Have The Time Test As Many As You Can.

I Am Out Of New Suggestions, Right Now.

Good Luck.

@johnpoiron

The Updates Site From M$ - Only IE Can Access It - Sometimes Display OPTIONAL Updates For Drivers.

( YOU HAVE TO CONFIGURE IT CORRECTLY, SO IT SHOWS ALSO OPTIONAL UPDATES ).

Can You Try This Final Suggestion ?
