It appears not to be so much a different approach as it does the time of day, or weather conditions.

Worst, because Google didn't win? Remember, at the beginning of the article, he states Bing is updating his map with 129TB of new or current images. I try it with my own home and notice Google was an old image while Bings got a more current one.

Worst because either Bing or Google does a great job delivering the photos. It's like having a "VS." article about the color of the metal in ultrabook designs and trying to imply that it may actually be germane to performance.

this author is def pro Bing, clearly showing its best vs Google's worst .. besides, the comparison is for Bing's new pictures where as Google did not update their servers. That was the last chance for anyone to be able to compare any GIS with Google before the update.

Satellite imagery only tells half the story (they can be fancy, but useless). It's the actual LABELLED MAPS that matter. Google has way way more detailed labelled maps than Bing. For example, see a map of Dhaka, Bangladesh (one of Asia's largest cities) on both Google and Bing, and you'll see what I mean.

Just based on the facts...

Google offers a much better, but highly outdated street view in most all areas - especially North america. Whereas Bing "technically" offers it, but misses out on a majority of american cities; even capitols. By the way, the street view function is typically about a five year old view in almost all areas - presently.

The street view (for North america) for both Google and Bing should be updated this year - to the cost of some 400++ tera

Sorry but being a GIS Analyst and all that you can not compare satellite imagery from one company to the next. It all depends on the time of day, angle, time of year, and the most important thing is the Satellite. It is like trying to compare apples and oranges. it just doesnt work like that. The better test is to check the resolution and post processing methods. I could easily take two images, edit them and adjust colours, saturation,
Hue, and Levels to make them stand out more. This is one the most poorly written with little understanding of imagery. Also seemed somewhat one sided.

this is perhaps one of the stupidest articles I've read, I really never cared how sharp images are in google maps, all I care about is if it can tell me how to get from one place to another.

Clearly, the author doesn't understand the purpose of maps. The point of maps isn't how pretty the pictures are. It's how well a map can get you from Point A to Point B, and how detailed the map labels points of interest. Trying to compare Bing Maps to Google Maps by comparing how pretty the pictures are is idiotic.

Bing maps gave me only 1 option for my route to work where Google gave me 3 - and choices make a difference when I work different hours and want to avoid certain roads.

I have always found Google Maps to be accurate. Bing Maps are sometime inaccurate and wrongly label places and roads. Bing maps also do not offer street view for all the places in USA.

Just looked at my house with Bing maps and it appears to be the same map that Google shows but has been cleaned up a bit digitally. A few years out of date judging by the car parked in the drive.

Andrew Hansford is Spot-On with his evaluation.

You can't compare near noon pics, with obviously late afternoon pics with L-O-N-G shadows.

Also you can't fault Bing or Google, for clouds (DUH!!!) It's a secret, so don't tell, But Neither Mickeysoft nor Google can actually control the weather. Shhhhhhh!!!!!

Paid advertisement by Bing? Good god at least compare the same photos.

Apparently the editors will publish any piece of crap as long as it is labeled content.

Rand McNally can get you from place to place as can Mapquest. Many people use satellite imaging to see cemeteries and other physical features and clarity is paramount. So this is not a "stupid article", it is perhaps more intricate than your needs require,
