Wow, what a flash back. I've seen some impressive displays of those tubes and they sure generate a lot of heat. They go way back to the count down timers that NASA used in the Mercury and Apollo missions.

Beautiful. One correction: Nixie tubes were invented in the US in the '50s (and I still have some I bought around 1970). By the '80s they were rendered obsolete in the US by other display technologies, but the USSR continued to make them.
