It isn't that Apple products can't be made in the USA. The problem is you can't produce enough in the USA to meet demand. In order to pump out enough to meet demand for Apple products, they have to have factory workers living on-site and willing to work 12 hour shifts 6 days a week.
While I would argue that American workers would do it, the labor unions won't allow it. Additionally, China doesn't have the EPA regulating them. That is why Apple had to go to China. Not because Americans lack skill or commitment.

What a crock when they pay Samsung and others to make their devices.

Then why does Google pay for Samsung and others to make their devices. They could employ all US sources to make their phones and tablets also.

its good to see products made in the USA, but will the parts they are made from be made in USA also? most likely not~ its a step in the right direction at least(for marketing)

For those who keep simpering about "well why don't they make their other products here?" in their snide little elitist voices.... read the article... it says this is a test case.

"" "We've been absent for so long," he said, referring to manufacturing not happening in the U.S., and added: "We decided, 'Why don't we try it and see what happens?'" ""

Remember also that Apple runs probably half of its profit on its inflated device sales. It's largely dependent on the big squishy margins of manufacturing in places like china where things like workers rights amount to "you have the right to bleed into this product as your fingers are worked raw;" Whereas Google is more diversified and can afford to experiment with moving products back on shore.

(also, remember, this gets them around all those nasty little "import injunctions" Apple is so fond of throwing at its competitors.)

Have you seen pictures of the air quality in China and all the people wearing air masks because of it??? If the choice is to get rid of the EPA to have Apple build here or have the EPA keep our air quality better than China's, Apple can go...

I assume Google is using more machines to put the phones together, plus they factor in the miles traveled by the parts, and by the end-product to consumers.

So, the old manufacturing jobs are really gone. These new jobs will require technicians with at leas a two-year degree to be eligible for the job.

An underwhelming overpriced streaming gimmick accessory gadget that will only be sold online in the Google Store is an embarrassing stunt that proves Apple's point. Why doesn't PCWorld bash Microsoft and Ballmer for not making any of their hardware products in the USA? Gee, that's not hard to figure out.

I'm not in the market for a tablet, but if this is at least ASSEMBLED in the U.S. then I will buy one. We need to employ Americans first, and when we get our economy back on track the rest of the world will follow.

We need to build more of everything in this country. we need the jobs. there is no reason why anything cannot be made in this country. it takes us to make that happen. Apple should be one of the first companies to do this. at least Google is giving it a try. I hope it catches on. if the automobile companies can make vehicles from parts all over the world including here than every company can do it. it would be great to see more made in the USA, instead of china on products sold world wide. don't you agree?

This is a dumb article with a stupid title. Google hasn't refuted anything at this point. Trying to compare the manufacture of millions of devices a month with a device that no one wants, isn't yet available, and is greater than three times more costly and less capable than comparable devices is inane. Must be a slow day at PC World.

ANY (and all) Apple products could be produced in the united states - and could not only meet demand, but exceed it. This in fact proven to Jobs on many occassions. Naturally he ignored it. One would also not need work those hours, those shifts, or be living on site to be able to do it. The labor unions would in fact allow it; but Apple's profit margins would not. It would also not take much work to fit/retrofit any manufacturing procedure to make it safe enough for the EPA - darn it even works at places such as coal power plants.

Apple did not have to go to China; they elected to do it based upon corporate greed and not much else. The statement between Jobs and the president was in fact typical.

I honestly would buy a US made device over an Apple Made in China device. Even if that meant paying more. This would bring more jobs back to America and get more people off the streets.

Everybody says they will pay more for USA made products but seldom do. Is this product truly made in USA or just assembled here? Seems to be 3x more expensive than competition's products. Lets see how it does.
