A side note: given that the promotion is only valid through 1/31/13, it seems likely that the "at least by October" reports are valid. Otherwise, there wouldn't be enough time for the deal to gain much traction.

As long as you have 2GB RAM and a dual-core processor (Pentium D/Core Duo/Athlon x2 or later), you ought to be fine.

7 runs well on that hardware spec, 8 runs GREAT on it. The fan kicks on far less frequently, core processes take up about 20% less resource and boot (on my laptop, at least) is better than 30 seconds faster.

Out of curiosity, I set the VM I'm running Windows 8 in to 1GB RAM and a single-core processor (I normally emulate a dual-core one and 3GB RAM), and it still ran reasonably well.

except that once 8 launches XP support (sadly for a lot of people) ends. meaning that if a new security breach is found or something similar then there won't be an update to fix that issue. I highly suggest anyone not on Vista or new upgrade, not neccassarily to 8, to a new version of Windows once 8 hits. if you are runing on an older machine, with something like sub 2 GB ram or a slow proccessor, then 8 is the way to go although there is deffinetly nothing wrong with going with 7 if your system supports it.

I can't even upgarde. My present laptop came with Windows 7 HP, but I used my anytime upgarde to move to Ultimate.
I woudl actually have to use my restore CD's and go back, and then upgrade to Windows 8. Then I would have to install everything again. Hmmmm!
I think I will just install it on it's own partition.Looks like I better get that 750GB drive Iwas looking at.

Ahis point, you do understand the x86 version has the typical desktop UI along with the Metro UI and you can move the Metro UI...in fact using a registry change you can diable the Metro UI from ever appearing until you want it too. You are aware of that..right?
In fact if you Google, you will see Windows 8 basically still has Wndows 7 underneath. You can restore many of the UI option back to Windows 8 by simply changing some registry items.
As MS stated, they removed the START because no one was using it. Most people use desktop shortcuts and they pin the most used apps to the taskbar. The Metro UIis basically the new start menu. You can pen ANY appliation to it. It simply won't have its native icon anymore.
But you dont hae to use Metro at all. You can disable it and just use the Windows 8 desktop and you can restore many Windows 7 U elements if you just search online.
I personally will buy it bec of the discount. But I likely won't install it right away, or if I do install I wont use it right away. For a typical laptop like what I use, I can't take advantage of the touch so the improvemn really wouldnt be one. But if I had the Surface of the tablet by Asus or Samsung that runs Wndows 7, then yes moving to 8 would be perfect.
Likely I will get the Samsung Series tablet off Ebay.

WRONG!!! And obviously you haven't been paying attention. Look at the article. It says even XP users can upgarde. HELLO!!!
Pay attention. Windows 8 "SUPPORTS" UEFIbooting for those who have compatible hardware. It will boot on ANY X86 Intel system that meets the minimum requirements.
You personally shouldnt upgarde because right here you just shown you arent even knowledgable to perform it properly.
ou can even boot it on a Mac. The biigest issues with Wndows adoptions are those who are misinfomed, don't read and lack the ability to get aswers to what they dont know.
