I, personally, prefer OS X, but speaking for Microsoft, I believe the Windows upgrade is more expensive because updates don't come as often with Windows as with OS X.

Nice to know that someone who perfers OSX can't even formulate a coherent statement.

Ease up on the commas, they should be used correctly next time.

I wouldn't pay for either. I'd personally be willing to pay for Ubuntu before ever paying for Mac or Windows. Ubunut is free, but I would buy it if I had to. The quality of the two most popular operating systems definitely does not meet my expectations, or their cost!

The ONLY edition of Windows I have is the Windows 8 preview release, because it is FREE. I don't like it. Microsoft blended the Xbox 360 with the Windows Phone to create an OS that is somewhat suitable for a tablet, but not a Laptop or Desktop PC.

The 84.4 "combined share of Snow Leopard and Lion, and thus the percentage of all Macs able to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion" does not take into account users like me who have Snow Leopard, but cannot upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion because of hardware (processor) limitations. I am stuck where I am with my old MacBook Pro--and that's OK for now--unless I want to pay big bucks for a new laptop. Not going to happen. Sorry, Apple.

My apologies for the duplicate postings. It did not appear to submit--until I finally refreshed the page and saw the duplicates.

When is PCWorld going to get around to fixing this issue with the submit/sign-in button? Happens to many people (including moi).

I like the utter waste of an article that at some point admits to the reality that 92.2% of all PCs that connect to the internet are of the Windows variety. Here's something else to consider. How much more does it cost to buy a MAC that is spec'd the same as a $400 Windows PC? Any cost for upgrades becomes completely insignificant in the face of such a fact. I could probably build a PC today for $400 and build another in a few years for another $400 and spend less than for one comparable MAC that even with the upgrade would not be nearly as good as the second $400 build. I don't know. I guess it is interesting to know even if totally pointless.

Well speaking of experience, I've been running Windows 8 Developer Preview since day one. Then also tested the Consumer Preview and Release Preview.

Windows 8 is so good that I permanently dedicated my HTPC to it. It plays absolutely everything, never crashed once, and detected everything (all devices) automatically, negating the need to discover appropriate 64-bit esoteric device drivers such as for an 8-channel HD audio, or USB-3.

Here's my hardware:

Of course I'm going to upgrade to the final Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 when it becomes available. And I'm on the record as one fervent supporter of Windows 7, since I tested the 64-bit beta back on January 13 2009; just look at my signature...

Basically twice as fast as Windows 7 on the same exact hardware!

What a deal!

Regardless of price, nothing comes close to the performance, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of Windows 8 in modern kick-ass hardware.

the clear winner will be Ubuntu 12.04 LMAO OS-X is slow and buggy, Windows8 is awesome but METRO just ruins it and will alienate most of the user base.

Linux (ubuntu and others) is like getting a "free" kitten. At first they're so cute, then the time, and energy to make it work, will drive you mad.

Metro should be only for touch screen versions of hardware. On desktop PCs is NO good!!!
