I know this might sound silly but here is an even simpler idea. If you do not know the person personally do not 'friend' them. That might a bit complicated for some people though. It also solves a lot of privacy issues too - all in one stroke!

Or, you can simply avoid Facebook and keep yourself and your family safe for the future until the "next big thing" comes along that will steal your privacy and money.

One of the best social networking reality articles I've read in a long time.

Who cares? If you don't want anyone to know you then go hide in a cave and stay off the Internet! To me the point of the Internet is a chance to MEET people I otherwise will never meet cuz I'm only here in one place (zzzzzzz) and my neighbors suck. I WANT to meet new people all the time. Some people also make fake accounts so they can play the games in fb. If fb shut down all fake accounts there would be no fun reason to be on fb, but I'm a tech and I DO NOT approve of any spread of malware etc. Keep the ones doing no harm and get rid of the spread of virus ones.

Nobody STOLE any privacy or money from anyone in Facebook! American so called free education is supposed to be one of the best in the world. But funny how Americans don't USE that education when it matters most. People are responsible for "reading the screen" when they decide they want to setup a profile anywhere on the Internet and responsible for taking care of their own money. People died to give you that freedom. Saying that Facebook or any other online entity did these things is lame and irresponsible!
