I have a VLC media player installed on my comp, as well as Windows Media Player. I originally installed VLC because it would play some videos that WMP would not. I prefer WMP, just because.

I have been into the control panel/add remove programs, and have asked that WMP is my default player. It doesn't seem to "keep".

Now, anytime I download a video it automatically saves it as a VLC media file. Thats fine and dandy, it wll play on WMP, but I must right click the file first and ask it to play with WMP.

I don't want to remove VLC, but am unsure if I can disable it. I don't want these videos saved as VLC because I prefer to play them on WMP. Also, I don't want to have to convert every downloaded video manually to a windows media file.

Any idea what I can do?

I hope this quick explanation makes sense, and I appolagize in advance if I posted in the wrong forum.

As always, thank you in advance.

Hey Sid!

Long time no see.

When I installed The KMPlayer to play KMV files, it changed the Association of all video and audio files to play primarily in the KMPlayer.

What I did was to : Go To Control Panel > Default Programs > and change the Association of those files back to WMP. This is the one I also like
as my primary player.

As you see in this screen shot, when you click and highlight an extension, you will see on the top left corner which program will play that file.

You can change that association by clicking on the Change button on the top Right corner of the screen.
A pop-up will appear and a selection of programs installed on your PC will be recommended. Choose the one you want to play those files with.

There is another place in control panel "AutoPlay" but, I can't remember if you use XP or Windows 7.

Howdy hey Flash, thanks for the reply, I thnk whjat you just said is exactly what I need to do, however, I am running XP and don't see anything in the control panel to selct associations, the only thing I know about is under add/remove programs to choose a media player, surely there is somewhere in XP to select the associations you mentioned, where? LOL

Thanks again, like I said, I have no problem with the VLC player but its annoying for it to do it without asking.

Hey Sid !

I thought you forgot about us! It's been quite some time. Nice to hear from you.

OK, so XP. First, follow these instructions to "Show File Extensions". Don't forget to click on the "Apply to all Folders" button on top.

Then, follow these instructions to change the program that files opens with which program.

I guess Windows 7 is a bit more accessable than XP.

Any problems understanding ask and I will explain further or post screen shots.
