At $99, it must be a huge loss leader. I wonder if it will require a monthly fee?

I agree with EDELBRP. It's got to lose money. The controllers would cost at least half that to market for sure. It is a really smart idea, I hope it catches on... Maybe they got a run on the hardware or something.

No thank you, Android should stick to phones. Xbox 360 rules.

Purposely misquoting someone... that's just not right and is grounds for an abuse report.

Why? Why do we need this? We don't need game consoles or things like this. People should just develop for open platforms like PC and the android phones. Those are free to develop for, can get better quality and don't have a middle man(like Sony/Microsoft) dictating what you can or can't do and taking a portion of your money while charging you to update. You can hook both a PC and android phone up to a controller wired or wirelessly so why waste more money on a crappy device that can't do anything but some games?

I completely agree. How about the new Vizio Co-Star with a controller? It does Google TV/Android apps and tv. Why not just make the gaming part of it better so people don't have 3 separate boxes sitting under their tv when 1 will do everything they want.

Kickstarter funding is almost complete and there's still 29 more days for people to donate. This smells like vaporware to me, though. I wonder what would happen if they took the money and ran and nothing actually was produced or sold?

I'm told that the hardware's being sold at cost (or thereabouts), and that Ouya takes a cut of game revenue. It's basically the same model Amazon uses for the Kindle Fire.

That, to me, would have been much easier had they not garnered so much publicity over it. It's harder to disappear after you turn the world's eyes on you.

I can't imagine who this would be marketed towards... The hardcore gamers will be put off by the poor specs and casual gamers do all they're gaming on tablets and phones.

YES! Everyone's always wanted an Android powered game console! Android's game quality is the best! Screw Halo and GTA - we've got Angry Birds! /End sarcasm

Good point. I'll get one for $99 if it comes to market! (I think the controllers will be $30 each, btw.)

Interesting but i hope it dies. With all the problems Android has with fragmentation, security invulnerabilities, and instability I think this threatens to drop the quality bar in gaming.

People need to remember that the wii was not a graphics jaugernaut and it still sold more than ps3 or 360. The everyday person wants fun not great graphics and sound. If I tell most of my family that for $99 they will be able to play all ofntheir mobile games on tv they would jump at it. So they are hitting the casual mobile gamer and techies by making it open source. Obviously someone knows what they are doing if they raised that much cash already and I can guarantee that most people who play mobile games haven't even seen this thing yet. Pretty impressive.

because having options in life is what the world is all about. I'm sorry, but anyone who is against this idea, isn't intelligent enough to comprehend the fact that consoles sucked this generation due to the high costs to develop games, not to mention major hardware flaws (really Microsoft, it took you THAT long to own up to the RROD?!?!?!) additional costs for online gaming, and everyone is trying to make their own little ecosystem so that they can force whatever they deem necessary on us.

This is where Ouya comes in, due to the reasons above, most game developers are literally going mobile to Android and iOS. The reason Android is going to be used for Ouya is because it doesn't cost anything, and there's already a crap ton of games on there and since they have to individually optimize for each phone model, I highly highly doubt there will be any issue with adding a single dedicated console to that list.

So to you naysayers who seem to be content sucking on Microsoft's worthless toes or their RROD, not to mention Sony and Nintendo's absurd peripheral pricing, then by all means go about with your gadgets and continue doing as the big 3 want you to do with them all the while draining your money. Seriously there is no need for this to be a fanboy war. This is a PUBLICLY ANNOUNCED, PLANNED, AND FUNDED console. Judging on the fact that they raised more than 300% of what they needed, i would go as far to say that this console will do very very well.

and to recap the whole current generation sucking thing, granted 2 of the best games i have ever played are from this generation, but i just dusted off my 12 year old PS2 and started going through my old library and there is no better generation of consoles and games than the PS2 generation. :)

I have that fear to, but to look at the glass half full, due to the increased attention to mobile gaming, games like GTA 3, Shadowgun, Samurai Vengence II (literally the best mobile game ever played) Dungeon Defenders, wouldn't have happened. I mean really, it seems the fun factor is increasing. More often than not with this generation, a game comes out and is either horridly short, or you have to purchase addtional DLC or an online pass or the gameplay sucked and the graphics were good, etc etc. Compared to last gen, this generation sucked ass. Aside from Metal Gear solid 4, Uncharted, Gears of War and the new Batman games, I really think the overall game quality, has dropped tremendously.
