Help
I get the following message when trying to check for updates in windows 7. "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Another issue I am having is after being on the internet for a period of time I will try to type in the address bar and the upper case U will start running and will not stop. I have to reboot to be able to use my keyboard.
I am wondering if the two issues are related???

Welcome to PCWorld Community.
Could you give us a bit more info on the browser you are using and did you have Windows Update service stooped at any time in the past
and haven't restarted this service.
On the Task Bar (where the clock is), you will see a Flag. Does it have a RED X on it?
In the mean time, could you run this anti-malware program for us :
Download@MajorGeeks
This link will redirect you to MajorGeeks.com where, your download will start after a few seconds.
Install and when asked if you would like to update the definitions, please click on the Yes or OK button.
Do a Quick Scan of the PC.
Once the scan done, MalwareBytes' will ask to delete what is has found (if anything) please do so by clicking "Select all" and then "Delete".
A notepad will appear after the scan with a log of what it found. Please save a copy and post it (Copy and Paste) in your next reply

I use Google Chrome most of the time, occasionally using IE8. I am not aware of Windows update being stopped.
I had a red flag, Security Essentials isn't monitoring your PC because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now. I clicked start a message popped up, "Couldn't start Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Click Help for more information about the problems. It said "Your PC must run genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials. Internet access fees may apply while downloading."

I definitely suspect malware here, if multiple services are stopped. (particularly the AV) In addition to malwarebytes, you might want to try running SuperAntiSpyware.

Yes, infected and maybe by something that isn't visible to those scanners yet.
OK, I see that the adware wasn't deleted as asked in my first post.
Did you click on "Select all" and then on the "Delete" buttons when MalwareBytes' finished scanning?/
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options. When you click on Folder options, a screen will
appear. The middle tab will be named "View" click on that tab. Near the middle of that screen, you will see
two radio buttons. Click on the bottom one that says "Show Hidden files , folders & drives".
Now, click on the "Apply" button and the OK button at the bottom, in That order please.
After running (update first) SUPERAntiSpyware and Deleting what might come up in the scan,
Please run a Full scan of MalwareBytes'. This will take some time. Please "Delete" what it finds.
Do those scans and post their respective logs in your next reply.
We will go from there.

I ran into the same thing recently. About the time my MSN account got hacked and I have doien nothng and all is noormal.

It sure sounds like you've been attacked by something.
First of all a service is an application that starts up with the operating system. You can turn services on and off through control panel\Administrative tools\services.
Typically when I get things like this i either restore back before I had the problem OR I run a virus checker or malwarebytes in safemode. Typically viruses are designed to start when you boot. Booting safe mode will get before the viruse starts running.

In this case, MBAM is not a suitable candidate for this task. A more suitable scanner would be SUPERAntiSpyware.

Not familiar with all AV programs but talking about a safe mode scan, thats one thing I like about avast, you can perform a "boot scan" to scan for crap before windows loads up and the maleware has a chance to possibly mask itself.

The advantage of safe mode scanning is really helpfull if the attack disabled you anti-virus software. The last time it happened to me i was able to scan in safe mode and remove the attack. Then after I rebooted I was prompted by Norton 360 that it needed to be repaired. did the repair nad was back to normal. I also did a scan after I was repaired just to make sure.

Flashorn's point is that MBAM's maker specifically state that MBAM is designed to work best in "normal mode" if I recall correctly. It certainly does not hurt to run it in "Safe Mode", but their position is that it is a waste of time as it will be more effective to only run it in "normal mode". Personally, since it is my time to waste, I will tend to run it in both "normal" and "safe" mode.
In general, it is an excellent idea to run "malware" scans in Safe Mode.
