I have two ASUS laptops with different branded cores and I'm looking to draw a comparison between the two and decide which would be better suited for my purposes of university, movies and gaming.

i7 Q720 - 1.6GHz
ATI Radeon HD5730 1GB
4GB RAM
500GB HDD

vs.

AMD A6-3420M - 1.5GHz
ATI Radeon HD6520G 512MB
8GB
750GB HDD

Both have a 1366x768 native resolution.

Ok, if gaming is a core function you need, then the only choice is the i7, as it ships with a video card meant for gaming,

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov

I would go with the i7 since it has a better video card. The hard drive is smaller but you can use external drives if needed.
Windows 8 is a useless OS that Microsoft released that has many flaws and bugs. DO NOT USE IT. Use Windows XP or Windows 7.
