I think the RT model starts at $600 (32GB), and the Pro (x86) one starts at $1000. I do think it's a bit high though - although the other x86 ones are similarly priced, for the RT model, that is a bit high. Did they miss the pricing of the Nexus 7 or something? (I'm not expecting them to go that low, but even the iPad is cheaper than this...) I don't understand why they didn't use an AMD E450 for the Pro model though, which would've cut costs quite a bit.

LiveB, where are you getting your numbers from? All I've seen on line so far are guesses (e.g., "competitive with the iPad") --- I didn't think any official prices had been put out.
Desktop: Core i5 3570K w/Corsair H80 cooler - 250GB Samsung 840 SSD (boot) - 1TB Seagate Hybrid HDD (storage) - Galaxy GTX660 GC - 8GB G.Skill 1333 RAM - Antec 620W PSU - Antec Sonata III 500 case - Win8 Pro 64-bit w/WMC
Media Center: Core i3 3220 - 128GB Plextor SSD (boot) - 1TB Samsung HDD (storage) - Radeon 4350 - 8GB G.Skill 1333 RAM - Biostar ECO HD61V kit - Win7 HP 64-bit
Surface RT - Lumia 900

My guess is that he is repeating the "speculated" price...i.e. http://www.bgr.com/2...ice-600-dollar/

Yes and no...with regards to the iPad being cheaper.

Yes, you can get iPads (with less storage or the older model) for less than $600, but a 32 GB iPad is $600, which would be comparable to the Surface RT 32 GB model if it is priced at $600.

And to my knowledge, Microsoft has not announced the prices yet.

Good point - I forgot about that. Still, with the entry price being higher, you'll probably get quite a few people who wonder why they should buy that when the iPad has plenty of apps and most have already heard of it and used it. Of course, we'll have to wait and see what they decide to charge for it.
