As the title says, what is in your opinion the #1 smartphone to have at the moment, where cost, carrier and brand is of no concern?

At very current time Samsung S3, HTC One X and iPhone 4S are very nice cell phones to pick from.

If you're a heavy Google apps (Gmail, Docs, etc.) user you should probably consider Android. If you're invested heavily into the Apple ecosystem and are satisfied, an iPhone might be the way to go (you should probably wait for the iPhone 5). Either way, you can't go wrong with any of these phones.

Here's a timely article:
http://www.pcworld.c..._right_now.html
I'm a Windows phone fan myself but as the article suggests, I would wait until WP8 releases (if you're leaning that way).

What I've found is that if you like an open platform with a lot of choice, Android is a good choice. If you want something simpler, the iPhone or a WP7 device would be best. As compnovo mentioned, wait for WP8 - existing WP7 devices will NOT be upgradable to it (only to 7.8).

Personally, I have a Nexus and am happy with it - the specs aren't the best, but you get stock Android and timely updates. I can see how it might be a bit too big for some though (personally, I like it that way).

Dear Extremist, As per the forum thread I have suggested finest cell phones currently available in the market. I myself uses iPhone 4S users and I am pretty satisfied with it. I know that iPhone 5 is going to be one of the best when it is launched put presently it is not released.

Right now everyone is talking about the S3 and the iPhone 5. I would definitely wait until the iPhone 5 comes out before making a decision.

If you are asking about best available smartphone without a price frame. I would like to say Samsung smartphones are cheaper and better no doubt in that. Now Google launch its Nexus awesome smartphone. as well the review is too good. Few more laptop companies are also stepping into smartphone section like DELL, ASUS, INTEL etc...

While I have been an iPhone user in previous years, i'm now inclined to cast my lot with Samsung Galaxy S3. I'm now a proud owner of a Galaxy S3 and I can definitely say it has sufficiently answered my mobile computing and communication needs. You see, the downside with iPhone is that its nearly impossible to install non-iOS software on your iPhone. With the Galaxy S3, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of apps available that I can download and install. So for me, the #1 smartphone at the moment is Galaxy S3.

Do you mean non-Apple App Store apps? Because to my knowledge, you cannot install non-Android apps on a Galaxy S3 (or any other Android phone) just like you cannot install non-iOS apps on an iPhone (aka an iOS powered phone).

If so, I would argue that it is not "nearly impossible" to install non-App Store apps. I will agree that it is way more difficult to install non-Apple App Store apps on an iPhone than it is to install non-Google Play apps on an Android phone since you have to "jailbreak" an iPhone...but it is not nearly impossible...lots of people "jailbreak" their iPhones...just like lots of people "root" their Android phone to get "unsupported" version of Android on their phones (i.e. if their phone manufacturer has not released the latest Android for their phone or want to ditch some the UI elements that their phone manufacturer "added" to stock Android).

I think what he means it there are multiple sources of Android apps. The Google play store is the safest bet for applications but they also have 3rd party areas where Android apps can be downloaded from one example is Amazon. One thing about Android is the older ANdroid versions on the cheaper tablets can't even acess the Play Store. I have a SIII and a Samsung Galaxt Tab 10.1 and I was able to download Chrome Browser to my SIII from day 1. Now my tablet Chrome wasn't even available with Honeycomb. Then about a month ago Samsung sent an update to ICS and I was able to DL Chrome to my Galaxy Tab.

Since the dawn of mobile phones I have had Sony Ericsson. They have never let me down. When I converted to smartphone, naturally I chose Sony. Im on my second Sony and I have to say, I have had no problems at all.
So for my opinion, Sony Ericsson is the best smartphone on the market.

I would avoid Motorola like the plague if you're looking for an Android phone. They have completely abandoned a whole line of last year's flagship phone (Atrix and it's derivitives, Photon, and Electrify) for AT&T, USCellular, and Sprint. I bought my Photon in March after considering the Nexus S 4G based on Motorola's promise to update the Photon to ICS. I waited for months and months, and as the end of Q3 (the promised update timeframe) drew near, they pushed it back to Q4 of 2012. Then last week, they decided to break their promise and leave these phones on Gingerbread, even though they are more than capable of running ICS or JB. They told us it was because the hardware couldn't handle ICS, but that's a crock- it's a dual core capable of 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM- and there are other phones based on the exact same chipset that have official ICS. To make matters worse, a few months before they broke their promise, they pushed an OTA update that locked the bootloader down hard, so there's no hope of installing a 3rd party ROM. It was a blatant slap in the face to their customers. The complete lack of support and anti-customer attitude of Motorola has made up my mind that this will be my last Motorola phone, and I'd recommend against them if you're at all interested in staying even somewhat up to date on Android.

As a side note, I didn't take the last "screw-you-loyal-customer" OTA update, and I'm running AOKP Jelly Bean right now. Shockingly, it runs smoother and faster than stock Gingerbread with motoblur! However, the camcorder and some video services don't work properly because we're missing some proprietary libs. There's a big campaign going on right now by all of Motorola's scorned customers to get them to unlock the bootloader and release the libs we need, but so far all we've gotten from Motorola is a big corporate middle finger.

I would hope that they're better now, since they are, after all, owned by Google. (but then again, they said they wouldn't mess with Moto's operations, so I don't know...)
