alright so this is what has happened i got a new mother board not to long ago and put it in, however my old heat sink was to big so my computer would shut its self off after about 5 or 6 seconds prolly because the processor was over heating.. so I got a new heat sink and it came and it fits my mother board perfect its installed nice and it even has a nice fan on it.... so now my computer stays on fine it stayed on for as long as i wanted just one problem....I have no picture. I am almost positive I hear the boot up noise, I only say that i think i hear it because i have like 3 fans and its a little harder to hear it but im almost sure i do.. if that matters. My monitor is fine and i have it plugged in tight at first I had it plugged into my video card and then when that didnt work i took the card out and plugged it into my motherboard. still same thing. Also you know how the computer cases have two lights one for power and one for the hard drive, well my power light is always on but my hard drive light never really comes on however I dont see how my hard drive would just stop? ive tryed a couple diffrent ide cables and I made sure it is plugged into the right slot on the motherboard, IDE slot 1.. which it is..I only have a 230 watt power supply which i know is low and that i need a bigger one but i dont see that as preventing my screen from coming up.. I mean it can power my computer on and stay on so i dont see how that would stop it. also i took my video card out and unplugged some fans and my dvd player just to free the power supply up but the same thing happened...If some one could please help that would be great, and also if you have any question just ask and I could give you some more information.. Ive double checked everything and I just cant see anything wrong, one last note is that ive never actually had my computer running with this mother board. < because i had to buy some new things for it > sorry so longthanxs brew-

Sounds rather fishy. When you purchased the new motherboard, did you make sure that it would be compatible with your video card? This could cause a lot of problems. Also, what is the name/brand of your video card, and does it require a 4 pin plug from your power supply to operate?

You need a bigger PS, it is NOT powering your computer as you have no HD activity and no video, what concerns me most, is that (from seeing your other post ), that you have toasted your CPU and motherboard, so the thing to do might be start from scratch, ............................................and a MUCH LARGER power supply.

[quote name='brewer37']I only have a 230 watt power supply which i know is low and that i need a bigger one...Hi Brewer. We have talked about this on a number of occasions. Your Power Supply is very low. You are defeating the purpose of having a PC if you continue to use a low wattage Power Supply. I believe you have built and rebuilt your computer at least once, if not twice. Please, before you do anything else, please upgrade your Power Supply to at least a 450W rating.

i really dont think its the ps i mean i took out my video card i unhooked 2 fans and i unhooked my cd and dvd drives and it still dose the same thing so how could it not be enough? i know i need a new one but i dont see why that would let me computer turn on but prevent anything from showing up on the screenThe biggest power supply I can find that has a 20 pin main power connector is only 350 watts? everything is either 20+ 4 or 24 pin main power connector and i need 20?

Brewer, think about all that you have done since you first told PCW about your first problem. You upgraded your motherboard, your video card, and your memory. You even upgraded your processor and got a brand new heatsink. All things consider, you have just built a brand new computer. The one thing you have not done is upgrade your Power Supply. You have some very modern, and potentially, power draining equipment. I know you may not think it is the Power Supply but I will almost bank that once you get a Power Supply that can support all of your current hardware, everything will run like clockwork. Also, according to you..."i took out my video card i unhooked 2 fans and i unhooked my cd and dvd drives and it still dose the same thing..." If you took all the potential culprits out of your system and it still does the same thing, how could it not be a power issue; especially since you took out the video card.

yea and i totally understand that, but heres what im saying is that i unhooked basically all the upgradres and it should at least power on and what else im saying is its powering on so why cant it get a picture? but as i type this iam lookng at power supplies and am going to buy one once i find what i need... What is the diffrence from a 20+4 pin main power connector and a 24 pin main power connector?? alost the biggest power supply i can find that fits my mother board < 20 pin power connector > is only 350 wattsAlso, according to you..."i took out my video card i unhooked 2 fans and i unhooked my cd and dvd drives and it still dose the same thing..." If you took all the potential culprits out of your system and it still does the same thing, how could it not be a power issue; especially since you took out the video card.I dont get what you mean? if i unhooked all the main componets taht take power and only keep the things i need it should easily have enough power??

[quote name='brewer37'] What is the diffrence from a 204 pin main power connector and a 24 pin main power connector?? A 204 is exactly what you may think. It is a 20 pin connector with the option to connect onto a 24 pin motherboard. Some of the more powerful motherboards have a 24 pin connection. With the 20+4 connectors, which are two separate connections - a 20 slot and a 4 slot, you would connect both plastic connectors as if you were using one 24 slot connector. For your use, you will only use the one 20 slot connector and the 4 slot will be free.In response to your post...think of it this way, with all other factors removed, what is left to cause your problem? You removed all the components that could cause a conflict within your system. Your 250W Power Supply may not have enough juice left in it to power anything at all. Think of a car battery. If your battery is dying, you can still drive and you can still use all the electrical components of your car. However, when your battery is just about dead, the littlest thing, like leaving your lights on, will drain the the last life of the battery.

I dont know if ive thanked you quite enough mphenterprises lol.. you prolly think im crazy putting this much money into an old computer its just when i first made a tiny upgrade i never really imagined it was going to affect virtually everything and didnt know that much about all of l the computer parts other wise i just would of redid everything and saved a lot of time lol.. so basically i need a 20+4 power supply would you say 450w is enough?

It's my pleasure Brewer :D It makes me feel good to help someone do something that would have cost them an arm and a leg elsewhere. Granted, this is what I do for a living but it is nice just to give advice when I can.Yes, a 20 or a 20+4 with a minimum of 450W is perfect. I would take everything out of the case you have now and start from scratch. Follow all the connection instructions and you should be fine.Think of it this way, you have built a very comparable system. If you ever want to, you can do it again and see if you can build another one. Eevntually, it will become like second nature.

yea the next one i do will be a brease , walk in the park.. lolBut im stil not positive just getting a bigger power supply is going to make this thing work.. So if some one asks me what kind of computer i have do i still have a dell or do i just have a custom made computer, the only thing that is the same is the hard drive/os and everything on the hard drive? what do yout hink lol

Nope, you have a custom. The second you started making modifications, Dell became a memory. If, once you get the new Power Supply, it still doesn't work, we can break it down piece by piece and make sure each component is okay but I have a very strong feeling you will be fine. :-)

mph is correct, remove EVERY thing from the case, except the MB, get a new power supply, at least a 450 watt, install the power supply, plug in the motherboard ONLY, and see if it will come on ( the power led ) and stay on for a min. or two, then , if it does, put in the next piece and do it again, then the next, and so on till you have all the pieces back in and see if it will post, if the power fails to stay on for a min. or too, you will know EXACTLY which component is fried, if any. When a power supply goes bad, its usually the voltage REGULATOR, so not all of your components will be able to power up, and the ones that do could be getting over voltages and burning up, slowly, like your hard drive or cpu, or motherboard components like the north and south bridges, which control almost all the motherboard functions, that is what was happening to you when you last booted it up, so when you put the components back in, test it between each one as I described.

the led you are looking for, is near the power switch, on the front of your computer
