Well an easier way is to file the "read" messages away. Create folders. I have an "ASAP" folder that is for current messages that I need to work on. Everything else that I am done with goes into a "File Away" folder. That email gets downloaded to my laptop using Win Live Mail. So why create all these rules? Just file it away. Easy, simple, and my method has been working forever, before internet with REAL paper snail mail

'The Tess' is right - you're much better off creating folders to keep your messages in, and filing them away where they 'belong'.
You can make folders for anything, and sub-folders too. Right click on the name of your account - just above the Inbox - and select 'New Folder', or on any other folder and select "New Subfolder'.
It can be a real problem with Thunderbird, and many other email clients, to keep lots of messages in your Inbox As you read messages, and delete them, they're only marked for deletion and hidden. They are not really removed until you 'compact' the folder.
Folders can get corrupted when you have lots of messages in a folder, many of them are deleted, and you don't compact often enough. This is mostly a problem for the inbox - while other folders may get very large you don't delete messages in them often. You should keep the number of messages in your inbox small, and move any you want to permanently keep to other folders or sub folders, and Compact regularly.

You can also search the Mozilla Knowledge Base for Thunderbird (as well as for Firefox) at http://kb.mozillazine.org/. This, http://kb.mozillazin...g_-_Thunderbird is a good Mozilla KB article on keeping Thunderbird working - and it includes a search box for any other issues or questions you might have with Thunderbird.
