Guys yesterday night i was working on my laptop and turned off after finishing. Then again after half an hour, when I turned it on, it asked me to start in safe mode or to start normally. I chose start normally but i didn't start showing No bootable device found. Insert a boot disk and press any key. I don't know what has wrong with it. In know the Windows is not crashed as if it does, it goes up to windows start up. Can anyone help ?

1. Will it boot into Safe mode?
2. Will it boot an OS or utility disk from the optical drive or a USB port?

Let us know.

Push F8 repeatedly after the manufacturer's logo appears.

I will try running it in safe mode.

If it won't boot a Linux distro from the USB port, then it's strangely wonky memory (which I doubt) or the MB has failed.

It also could be the CMOS battery on the MB has failed. When that fails the the BIOS won't work right and can't detect bootable devices.

What this means is you need to take it to the shop and have them diagnose the exact problem.

You might also want to reset the CMOS - remove the battery for a few minutes, and then put it back in. By the way, those batteries are cheap (often CR2032s), so you may as well try that.

I had this exact same problem in April. It DID boot in Linux distro (GParted), so I was able to back up the disk. Then called my computer guys to come fix it. They said the memory went bad. Replaced and upgraded it. Also the battery, but I already knew the battery was going, had been going for months.

Then in May, the registry died for no reason, still don't know why. Spent from May until end July, just reinstalling programs, after they reinstalled a clean XP Pro. Computer is Dell 8400, from 2005. No virus. SMART errors in May, per GParted report (can't see any SMART report within Windows). Report said the hard drive was about to fail, but when they tested it, worked fine. Still using it, but just a few minutes ago got blue screen today, and a day ago, can't read the code to understand what kind of error, happens when I click on a weblink. Reboots fine.

But now I have cloned disk, so am not going to have the problem, as before. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for replying with all your views and i am very much grateful to you all. It's fine now, the issue has been resolved. I tried installing the Windows and it started booting but that that i thought it is due to hard drive failure but it wasn't. Thank you all. I am happy

I was directed here because of a spammer with irrevelant info. Anyway, it is an old thread and the problem has been resolved. The short answer would have been when you got to the first screen, select Boot Optins and make sure the Hdd was selected. That is where the OS is installed. It was obviously set to something else and thus the no Boot Device Present message.
