I'm not on Linux now, but am thinking of going to it, given the horror of Win8 and 7's insane changing of the interface, and lack of backwards-compatibility.

UPDATE: that link to Brother Linux Drivers includes the machine I just bought from Amazon, which is a Brother MFC 8480DN. So if I went to Linux, I could get a driver for the scanner. It cost me $300. It scans, faxes, copies, and (the reason I bought it) has PCL 5 emulation. I need that to merge print my DOS documents, which I run in a DOS window inside XP.
Linux works differently, but since the drivers are available, you might want to look at that model.

Yeah, I'm trying to explain that to the Linux people in LinuxQuestions.org . That we WANT to pay for mass-produced Linux applications we can operate right outta-da-box.
There's much to like about Linux. But core stuff like Open Office, is dysfunctional. It's not worth buying, even though free.
So if Linux basic business apps are dysfunctional, then printers and other hardware won't be kitted with Linux. No reason to use an OS, if it has no good off-the-shelf business apps. It's not that business owners are lazy. THEY HAVE NO TIME, because they are already so busy trying to make the business productive. A big company can always contract with a Dell or Acer, etc. to get that programming as part of a large sale. But lots of little guys with lots of discretionary income, are left out. Which, MS and Apple, end up getting.
'Oh, but it's free software!' the Linux afficionado retorts: 'you just don't get it'. No, it's not free. It costs TIME. Here, it's more expensive to go to Linux, as you must chase down or write code, yourself.
Conversely, there are proprietary, industry-specific applications I can buy to operate on either Linux or Windows, although most are Windows. License fees run between $1,500 (annual) -- $40,000 (initiation) for stuff I can instead, simply program into a spreadsheet or even DOS word processing. So why would I pass on unnecessary cost to my clients, when I can do the same jobs in word processing or worksheet templates? And if Linux can't 'translate' common past file types, then I can't 'translate' my business over to Linux, however much I'd wish.
The Linux community doesn't consider such issues, when complaining about the lack of available drivers and software, for the OS. They need to create a mass market. Not, wait around for the other guy to do it. Whoever decides to tap this market will become rich, quickly. And rightly. If I profit by profiting you, that's the noble way to do it. Far more noble than 'free'. I could kick myself, too: for back when Unix was born, I could have learned it. Instead, I stuck with DOS. So now, 30 years later, I could be that rich person, having invented the wordprocessing and spreadsheets that work. Spilt milk.
I love DOS. I want Linux. But the time cost, I can't afford. So maybe this fracaso with Win8, will wake up the community.
Flipside: there is more Linux stuff available than in yesteryear. I just found two laptops, Acer 8573 and Dell 6530, by searching on 'laptop' plus 'linux', in Google.
So I guess it boils down to this: find out what the big companies on Linux buy for peripherals, etc. Those brands will be the ones offering Linux drivers, etc. Brother, is obviously among them.

I have been using a Cannon LiDE 30 scanner with mine for quite some time. Most of that line works perfectly. Though I haven't had to replace it in 10 years...

Once more, Windows is there for the Paid-for products, as is UNIX.

Again, Linux USERS write the software, not PAID PROGRAMMERS.

Once more, you are being an arrogant, egotistical arse that doesn't understand the Linux model. That much is obvious. You PAY MS to do the work for you. YOU PAY SUN/Oracle for UNIX, you PAY Apple for OS-X. You pay NO ONE for Linux. Get over it. Do the work yourself you tight wad. Others obviously don't care to cater to your needs for free.

Linux community doesn't care about your needs, because they don't line up. These people are spending their free time doing what they enjoy doing, while the likes of you, just bitch and moan that they are giving away enough of their time for you. Get over it.

Lide 110
If you want a higher resolution, the Canon LiDE 210 also has perfect support. Should those not be what you are looking for, post back, and we can help identify something else.

Why? Truth is obvious: Linux developers only want to be in the 'big' market, but some of its users -- apparently including you -- have the mistaken idea that the hardware manufacturers and software makers are to blame. No. End of story. You don't make hardware for software no one wants to build.
It's up to Linux community to build, and they prefer the proprietary big-company market, obviously. They've had over 30 years to decide to band together, and it's not happening. It's a free market, and it's their free choice.
It's your free choice to -- as you so quaintly put it -- 'bitch and moan' about my posts. And my choice, to ignore your posts, from now on.

Nope, no stalking here. You came into a thread about a scanner, and started on about something that was A. unwarranted, and B. completely off topic. It also goes against everything that Linux stands for. Your idea of grade a free software that competes with the mult-billion dollar industry that is Microsoft is a pure fantasy. It is also a detraction from those who understand the Linux limitations, and are willing to live within them. Move on already. People understood you the first time. You want everything in life to be handed to you for free. You feel entitled to it. You sound like most Americans. Get over it, you are entitled life and nothing more.
