Hi, I got an hdmi cable yesterday and hooked the laptop up with tv and everything on my laptop screen showed on it with no problems, but I'm totally nOOb on these stuffs so I'll have to ask: Is it possible to show the tv screen on my laptop using the same cable? I've heard many people says that it's a computer output only, but I saw this on Wikipedia:

Quote

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact audio/video interface for transferring uncompressed digital audio/video data from a HDMI-compliant device ("the source") to a compatible digital audio device, computer monitor, video projector, and digital television.

I understand from the statement above that an hdmi cable can function as an output AND input, I've googled it but found nothing but questions on how to hook a computer with tv :(
Thanks in advance!

Hi, Hoop.

I'm a little confused. Are you actually trying to send images from the TV to the laptop? Usually, it's the other way around.

The HDMI connector on a laptop is meant as an output and is not input capable. You'd need a video capture care with HDMI inputs for the laptop to display the output from a TV. Also, I've yet to see an HDTV with an HDMI output jack.

Hi, yup I've managed to do the other way around, so though I'd ask if sending tv images to a laptop is possible without any additional hardware.

Video capture card? So it's kinda: "Plug the AV cables to tv (output), plug the other end with a special box and connect the box to a laptop", right?
Yeah I think got the whole idea, I've heard about these stuffs, but I though there'd be a way or a trick to use the hdmi to do it.

Well, you've cleared the picture in my head so thanks a lot folks!

What you want can't be done, and it's not because of the cable (which, indeed, can send data in both directions). It's a matter of what the devices can do with an HDMI connection. PCs use HDMI solely to output media. HDTVs use HDMI only to receive media. It's impossible to go the other way around.

However, there are other ways to get television content onto a PC. If you tell us exactly what you need to do, someone here may have a solution.
