I've read everything I can find about FAX'ing over DSL & Everything says it Can't be done.

Maybe it can!!!!

The reason FAX can't natively be done over DSL, is because FAX is analog & DSL is digital. The 2 are Not (natively) compatible.

BUT it IS possible to send an Analog (audio) signal over DSL via. Magic Jack. Magic Jack uses VOIP to convert analog audio telephone calls to digital. The digital signal is sent over the internet to some place in USA that converts the digital signal, back to analog, dials the called number & lets people have (analog) phone converstations over the internet.

If the (analog) telephone input of the Magic Jack, is connected to the analog computer modem output, the FAX should work exactly like an analog voice phone call. The only difference would be that the Distant End user would be a FAX machine, & not human.

I already know that some genius is going to say how outdated FAX is & that Nobody uses it now. BUT the US Military & some banks still rely on FAX.

Any Magic Jack users willing to try this?

Hi, ML.

Magic Jack doesn't officially support this, but it's apparently possible--with a fare amount of tweaking. Google "magic jack" fax and you'll find plenty on this. There's even a web page devoted entirely to it (http://www.magicjackfax.org/).

Of course, if you have a scanner, there are services that will fax for you over the Internet, as well.

I don't have MagicJack, but have done it with Vonage (same basic principle...although Vonage "officially" supports faxing over their VOIP service).

Note: I have cable not DSL...but same principle.

From what I've learned, the FAX over internet doesn't work because FAX packets have to arrive in the correct order. That's possible when one TX FAX machine is Directly connected to a distant end RX FAX machine.

The problem is the Internet. The Internet delivers All the packets, but not necessarily in the correct order. Internet data (by design) may travel many routes. FAX can Not handle Out-Of-Order data. That is why Magic Jack can Never endorse FAX.

The "possible" answer is to S--L--O--W D--O--W--N the FAX transmission of the data packets, to a point where ALL the data packets arrive In-Line, Regardless of their convoluted path around the internet. I'm thinking I'll try 1200 Baud.

IF other VOIP companies offer FAX over internet, then they are S--L--O--W--I--N--G Down the TX packets & "Hoping" that they arrive in the correct order.

Somehow, I have to make FAX over DSL work to the US Military!!!!

Faxing over the Internet works just fine. Never had any issues with the faxes I sent over my Vonage fax line.

That shouldn't be a problem. Of course, a FAX machine cannot get a fax directly from the Internet. Fax is analog; the Internet is digital. At some point, something will have to connect with the fax using POTS (plain old telephone system). That's how fax-over-the-Internet services work. That's also how VOIP systems like Magic Jack work.

I don't know why Magic Jack and other VOIP systems can't do fax. My guess is that the way they convert analog audio to digital is optimized for human voices, not fax signals. But that's just a guess.

I suggest looking into an Internet fax service. As I've never used one, I can't make a recommendation.

Analog devices shall always haunt our advances (stumble) into the digital world. FAX might be the second to last technology that finds the scrap heap. But some further investigation might be called for as there are loads of devices that still rely on an analog audio device at either end, massive switching inbetween to support the phone system. Mounting signals, both analog and digital upon sub carriers. I'm not to sure I want my phone going over the internet, it's crowded enough, at least with my DSL and two dozen devices. FAX is/was mostly limited to 9600 BAUD, pretty much the upper limit for an analog signal. Tough it out and send an E-mail instead. I have a FAX but it won't receive, only send, just the way I like it. Now, with a modest investment, cable would be the next step up with high speeds on the lowest tier that DSL can't touch without fiber optic.

Would that I Could, But when I called the Air Force, I was told that it Had to be a FAX.
