I have an old Windows XP Pro computer. Is it possible to turn that computer into a VPN server that my Android phone can always connect to, so that when I know my transmitted data is encrypted when connected to various wi-fi networks (say at work or local coffee shop)?

I would prefer a method that does not require the purchase of additional software, but I am not sure if Windows XP has the necessary features built in.

I also understand that it may not be a perfect setup (such as if my home IP changes and screws everything up), but I am fine with dealing with stuff like that.

Hi, Anon.

I don't know if there's a way to do this with XP, or (more likely) Linux. But I'm pretty sure there are easier ways to send secure info over a public network. There may even be services that can do what you want for less than what that server would add to your electric bills.

If you give us the details of exactly what you want to do (shopping & banking online, upload secret files, etc.), someone may have a better solution.

From further research I've done it looks like XP does have the necessary incoming VPN feature built-in. Whether it can be used for what I want is the question.

I am looking to secure all internet traffic, whether it be general web browsing, banking or Facebook. (I do realize some activities may be secure already)
