First off...I've already posted this question at McAfee's own forums...but a dude with the same exact situation posted the same question about a month ago, and no one at McAfee ever posted anything. So I'm posting here, as PCW has a way of digging for answers... 8)Here's the situation:I've got the latest version of McAfee's security center (now 50% more bloated than the previous version), and I can't find a way to shut it down. Before I upgraded, I used to disconnect from the net, and then shut down everything running on my computer except for my DVD ripping/burning software to consolidate as much memory as possible. McAfee, being the memory hog as it is, used to free up a lot of space when I used to be able to turn it off. As of right now, there are 6+ background processes relating to McAfee which add up to over 75MB of crap running in my memory...and I'll be damned if I can't turn them off! Even if I manually end each process, they all come right back within a minute or two. Does anyone here know how to shut down McAfee?

As Aurora said in her post, I just realized we both posted the same solution at the exact same time. Should I delete mine? lolHere is what I would do, but others may say otherwise.Boot your computer into safemode, log into your administrator account, head over to your control panel, click on add/remove programs and see if it'll let you do a complete uninstall of mcafee. Running in safemode will prevent other mcafee addons in the program to start up when you log into windows, making it easier to uninstall everything.
Oh, I don't want to uninstall it.....not yet anyway. I just need to shut it down while I rip DVDs. My computer is about 3 years old, and isn't very fast. To be able to rip and encode a DVD, my computer is brought to its knees, and I need every MB of RAM and every clock cycle so it doesn't take all night for one DVD. Back when I was able to turn McAfee off, I noticed a high tendency for read errors while it was running, compared to when it was shut down. It's getting really annoying as I'm trying to back up all my DVDs to my TVisto http://www.galaxymetalgear.com/Products/3500tvisto.html_.

Is there like a right click option on your taskbar where the mcafee icon resides that will allow you to turn off all protection, or anything that even comes close for that matter? Try going into the program options and see if you can turn off the resident shield.

The old version did. That's how I used to shut the stupid thing down. With the new version, I can't find anyway to shut it down.

Open up your control panel in classic view and see if there's an icon that says mcafee on it. If it isn't there, I'm still looking ..

sure you want to keep something so annoying on your computer? Do you have ccleaner they have an add/delete program list as well (under tools). You should at the least be able to locate a file.

I have an idea. Kitrax, since you seem keen on keeping something that you obvious know is draining your system, why not work with it? Increase your memory significantly so that whatever memory McAfee does use will not be a drain on your system.

As an update, I never got any useful help from McAfee...so I dumped it durring my last re-format! :DI have since switched to AVG Free and I love it. It can be turned off if need be, it doesn't have 6 programs listed as running in the task manager (using a total of over 75MB), and it doesn't have 20+ different requests for internet access through ZoneAlarm. (AVG has 4 programs listed under the task manager adding up to 3.4MB, and 4 ZoneAlarm requests.) Paired with SpySweeper, my pc has bee just as clean as it always has been. :D
